Portsmouth Women's City Club Delivers Valentines to More Than 400 Seniors
Portsmouth Women's City Club hand-made valentines and assembled Lindt chocolate gift bags for more than 400 seniors and public housing residents across Portsmouth.

More than 400 seniors and residents of Portsmouth public housing received handmade valentines and gift bags this season, the result of weeks of coordinated effort by Portsmouth Women's City Club members working alongside the Portsmouth Housing Authority and Operation Blessing.
The project unfolded in stages. Club members gathered for a card-making workshop on February 4, handcrafting the valentines that would eventually reach recipients living in Portsmouth public housing. On February 12, members assembled the gift bags, filling them with Lindt chocolate donated by Operation Blessing. Delivery is scheduled for April 13, coordinated with Tammy Joslyn, resident service coordinator with the Portsmouth Housing Authority, and her staff.
"As a service-based organization running many events and collections to support the Seacoast Community," said Carrie Barron, PWCC president. "We wanted to bring Valentine wishes and sweet treats to those in our community who may be living alone."
The Valentine's effort was not the club's only February initiative. On February 27 and 28, PWCC hosted a Goods for Gather Food Collection at the Portsmouth Women's City Club House, accepting public drop-offs of protein bars, ready-to-eat soups, olive oil, tomato sauce, condiments, low-sugar cereals, diapers, baby wipes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and detergent.

The Valentine's project and food drive fit a pattern of sustained community giving that PWCC has built across the past several months. In October, the club ran a coat drive that collected more than 200 coats, distributed to You've Got Bridged and several local churches. In December, 30 seniors received holiday gift bags assembled from their personalized wish lists. Members also contributed $1,675 in Market Basket gift cards to Rockingham County Meals on Wheels, cards the organization distributes throughout the year to people in need.
