Alabama screens Young Washington free for America’s 250th anniversary

Americans for Prosperity-Alabama rolled out eight free matinee screenings of Young Washington across the state, pairing the film with America’s 250th anniversary programming and handing each guest a complimentary ticket, popcorn, and a drink. Advance registration was required because seating was limited, a setup that turned the screenings into scheduled events rather than casual walk-ins.

AFP-AL said the showings would run throughout July at eight locations across Alabama. The group framed the series as a civic turnout play as much as a movie outing, pitching it to families, students, and community groups that might not otherwise pay to get into a theater. State Director Adam Thompson said the 250th anniversary was a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" to reflect on the principles that built the country and come together as a community.

The film itself gives the campaign a local hook. Young Washington is directed by Birmingham-born Jon Erwin, who said he spent nearly a decade captivated by George Washington’s story and wanted the movie to be a "love letter to America" for the 250th anniversary. IMDb lists its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 13, 2026, and ChurchLeaders reported that it opened in theaters on July 3, 2026, just as AFP-AL was moving its Alabama screenings into July. Rotten Tomatoes places the story during the French and Indian War, around 1755, which means the film is built around Washington long before the presidency and the monument.

For Alabama’s indie-film world, that matters less as a patriotic release than as a distribution test. A Birmingham-born filmmaker’s work is being pushed through a statewide network of free screenings, which gives local audiences a structured reason to show up together and can extend the film’s reach beyond the usual opening-weekend crowd. It also shows how nontraditional film venues, from civic groups to local event organizers, can turn a title into a community gathering without the usual ticket-price barrier.

The bigger backdrop is Alabama’s own semiquincentennial calendar. America250AL says July 4, 2026 marked the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and its official centerpiece was Sweet Home 250 at American Village in Montevallo on July 3 and 4, with music, arts, food, and history programming. Against that schedule, the free Young Washington matinees read as part of a larger public-history run.
