Birmingham casting call opens roles in Kinigra Deon’s Sundown Town

A Birmingham casting call opened 28 non-union roles for Kinigra Deon’s Sundown Town as the feature continued filming in the Birmingham area. The notice, posted by Mobile-based Goleman Casting, LLC, gave local actors a real path into a project that is already tied to streaming reach and creator-led financing.

The breakdown is wide enough to matter to a working background and supporting-player pool. Goleman Casting said the production was looking for types that range from a white-passing, impeccably dressed woman and an albino Black man to a racist cop and even the president of the United States. That spread tells you what kind of ensemble Sundown Town is building, and it is not a background-heavy crowd scene with no speaking parts in sight.

Deon, the Birmingham YouTuber behind the project, is writing, directing and starring in the film. The story follows a group of Black college friends who take a wrong turn into a racially hostile town where local myths turn terrifyingly real, a setup that leans directly into the historical meaning of the title. Sundown towns were communities that kept Black people and other nonwhite people out after dark, often through intimidation rather than a written rule. Britannica defines the term that way, and Tougaloo College’s history and social justice database describes sundown towns as communities or counties that were all-white on purpose.

The movie is also part of a bigger push from Tubi and Hartbeat. Tubi said its creator-led film slate is set to launch in 2026 through the Tubi for Creators program and the expanded Hartbeat collaboration, and Deon is one of the inaugural creators in that lineup. The slate includes four original films, with additional projects led by DC Young Fly, Chico Bean and Karlous Miller of 85 South Show. Tubi said it reaches more than 100 million monthly active users, which gives the Birmingham-shot film a reach that most independent productions never touch.

That local production footprint fits the way Alabama film work actually moves. Film Birmingham serves as the film commission for the Greater Birmingham region and the primary liaison between productions and city agencies, while Alabama’s incentive program offers a 35% rebate on payroll paid to Alabama residents and a 25% rebate on other qualified production expenses. The state says it can award up to $22 million in incentives for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2026, and applications have to be filed at least 30 days before production starts, with principal photography beginning within 90 days of approval.

For Birmingham actors, that made Sundown Town more than a spooky title with historical bite. It was a working casting notice, a local set and 28 chances to get into a feature that needed Birmingham talent to fill out the frame.
