APP Tour's Seattle AARP Open Brings Senior Divisions, DUPR Integration to Amateurs

Seattle's first-ever APP Tour stop made DUPR mandatory, replacing UTR and requiring every amateur to link a Pickleball Den account before the next national event.

The number that will follow you from now on is not the one on your paddle label or your club's whiteboard. It's your DUPR rating, and if you have any intention of entering an APP Tour event in 2026, it had better be active, verified, and linked to a Pickleball Den account before registration opens. The APP Tour's AARP Open in Seattle made that official.

Running March 26-29 at Sideout Tsunami Pickleball Center, the event marked the first time the APP Tour had ever staged competition in the Seattle area. The facility's 26 indoor courts, including three championship courts, gave the tour room to run pro and amateur brackets simultaneously. Sideout Tsunami already required a minimum DUPR of 4.0 for its own advanced open play sessions, so Pacific Northwest players walking in had the credential the tour now demands from everyone.

That credential requirement is the sharpest operational change for amateurs in 2026. The APP Tour spent 18 months running registration through UTR Sports, but USA Pickleball and the APP Tour formalized a partnership with DUPR this year, making it the official ratings system and shifting all tournament registration to pickleballden.com. Here is the specific sequence: players need a DUPR account to register on Pickleball Den, and all scores are shared with DUPR at the end of the event. That means creating or verifying your account at mydupr.com, linking it to your Pickleball Den profile at app.pickleballden.com, and registering through that same platform. If your DUPR is unlinked, direct the player to app.pickleballden.com to create their account, then go to "Account" to link their DUPR. If your rating is stale or built on unverified matches, get into a sanctioned rating event at your home club before targeting a tour stop, not after.

For players in the 3.0-to-4.5 range, this is the part worth forwarding to your group chat: DUPR now functions as a single portable credential across Thursday night rec play and a national APP draw. DUPR ratings update after every match, usually within 24 hours, so playing consistently keeps your rating accurate and current. Playing competitive local events tightens your seeding accuracy at the tour level over time. The risk runs the same direction in reverse: entering a bracket below your actual level will show up in future placement and becomes part of your permanent rating record.

Seattle also put the APP Tour's senior-division investment on full display. AARP Champions (50+) and AARP Masters (60+) Divisions will compete across ten 2026 APP Tour events. "It's especially meaningful to bring the AARP Open to Seattle, in the state where pickleball began," said Barbara Shipley, Senior Vice President of Brand Integration at AARP. Running alongside those open age divisions, the Humana Cup is now in its third full season as a team competition format for professional players in two divisions, Champions (50 and older) and Masters (60 and older), with squads competing in men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles in a round-robin format at select tour stops and a season-ending final at the APP's Fort Lauderdale headquarters.

The progressive draw format the APP Tour is piloting in 2026 opens with a round of 64 and compresses across multiple days into a Championship Sunday final stage, a multi-day arc worth accounting for when you register. At the heart of the APP's Global Pickleball Alliance is a year-round world calendar inclusive of at least 30 pickleball tournaments in 2026, greatly enhancing international opportunities for players across the globe from Canada to Vietnam, India to England, and Australia to the United States, which means results from a Seattle amateur bracket now feed into a rankings structure that extends well past the Pacific Northwest.
