Global Sports and the Indian Pickleball Association announced on March 16 that the fourth edition of the Indian Open has been elevated to a PWR 1000 event, making it the first IPA-sanctioned tournament at that classification level in the country. The tournament runs April 1-5 at Crosscourts in Hyderabad, Telangana, with more than 1,500 players expected to compete across 56 categories for a USD 50,000 prize pool.

The upgrade is more than a classification change. It formally pulls Global Sports' private tournament series under the umbrella of national governance, a shift that organizers say addresses a structural gap that has long existed in Indian pickleball. "Getting sanctioned by IPA legitimises the structure that has been lacking in the Indian Pickleball ecosystem," the organizers stated in their release. The IPA, recognized as the sole official governing body for the sport in India, holds National Sports Federation status from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Shashank Khaitan, Co-Founder and Partner of Global Sports and also known as a Bollywood writer and director, framed the PWR 1000 designation as a starting point rather than a destination. "At Global Sports, our mission has always been to build a robust infrastructure for Pickleball. Aligning with the IPA allows us to formalise our efforts and ensure our players receive the national recognition they deserve. The Global Sports Indian Open becoming a PWR 1000 event is just the beginning of a long and fruitful journey to make India a global hub for the sport," Khaitan said.

IPA president Suryaveersingh Bhullar echoed that framing from the governance side: "By bringing Global Sports into the IPA fold, we are ensuring that every volley played in the Indian Open contributes to a single, unified vision for the country."

The fourth edition arrives on the back of a tournament series that has built genuine international reach. Across the previous three editions of the Indian Open, Global Sports drew more than 4,000 players from 19 countries. The organization has also staged the Monsoon Pickleball Championship and the recently concluded Grand Slam, establishing a tournament infrastructure that the IPA sanction now formally recognizes.

With IPA sanctioning in place, the Indian Open will operate under a uniform ranking system, centralized governance, and standardized competition levels, with the stated goal of creating official player pathways and improving data integrity for athletes competing on the national circuit. The alignment also means that future Global Sports events will fall under IPA oversight, extending the governance structure beyond this single tournament.

For players arriving in Hyderabad next month, the practical stakes are clear: 56 categories, a $50,000 prize pool, and rankings that now carry the weight of the country's national federation behind them.
