MCPS Continues Pickleball Diplomacy in 2026 With China Exchanges
MCPS continues pickleball diplomacy with China exchanges, sending 45 ambassadors for cultural and athletic ties during the Chinese New Year period.

Montgomery County Public Schools is expanding its Pickleball Diplomacy initiative in 2026 with two linked cultural exchanges aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties between the United States and China. The program will begin with MCPS hosting a delegation from Shanghai from February 5-7, followed by an MCPS delegation traveling to China from February 13-24 to visit Shenzhen, Shangyou, Hebi, and Beijing.
The MCPS delegation will include 45 ambassadors: 31 new student participants, seven returning student ambassadors, and seven adults. The timing of the trip overlaps with the Chinese New Year and Spring Festival, giving students and staff a chance to engage with communities during one of China’s most significant cultural periods.
MCPS announced the 2026 schedule on January 22. Student ambassadors are already preparing with pickleball training sessions and structured cultural learning activities to build both athletic skills and cultural competency before departure. The itinerary blends court time with school visits and cultural programming, reflecting the dual emphasis on sport and educational exchange that organizers emphasize.
“This initiative is about much more than sports,” said Dr. Jeffrey Sullivan, Pickleball Diplomacy leader and MCPS Director of Systemwide Athletics. “It is about building friendships, fostering understanding, and connecting young people one relationship, one rally at a time.”

Pickleball Diplomacy builds on the program’s 2025 launch, when MCPS led its first delegation to China in April and later hosted students and educators from Shenzhen in August. The initiative drew wider attention last July when Chinese President Xi Jinping acknowledged Pickleball Diplomacy in a reply letter, describing the exchange as a meaningful example of grassroots engagement and mutual understanding.
For local players and community organizers, the exchanges offer practical benefits beyond international goodwill. Expect returning student ambassadors to bring new drills, coaching techniques, and cultural perspectives to school and community programs. High school athletic directors and parks and recreation coordinators can leverage these exchanges to expand youth clinics, cross-cultural events, and partner visits, while parents and volunteers can look for opportunities to support pre-trip training and post-trip showcases.
MCPS frames the program as a long-term investment in youth development and diplomacy through sport. Watch for announcements from MCPS athletics about exhibition matches, presentations from returning ambassadors, and community clinics that will translate international experience into local court time. The 2026 exchanges will test whether pickleball can keep delivering both competitive skills and deeper connections - one rally at a time.
