Torrance Parks & Recreation broke ground Thursday on eight dedicated pickleball courts at Wilson Park, capping a planning process that stretches back to a Planning Commission approval in March 2025 and delivering what local players and community advocates have been pushing for in one of Southern California's most pickleball-hungry communities.

The ceremony took place at 3:15 p.m. on March 19 at the eastern end of Wilson Park, adjacent to the horseshoe pits and basketball courts at 2200 Crenshaw Blvd. City officials, local players, and community advocates gathered there following the reopening of Fields 3 and 4, marking two milestones for the park in a single afternoon.

The eight courts will accommodate 32 players at a time and will be situated near the park's existing tennis, paddle tennis, and pickleball facilities. Both fencing and nighttime lighting are included in the build, meaning players won't lose court time when the sun goes down. The City will report monthly to the City Council on construction progress until the project reaches completion.

The construction timeline shows the project advanced through City Council contract approval in April 2025 and design development in July 2025, with additional milestones in the October-November window not fully detailed in city documents made available.

The Wilson Park project also arrives with new regulatory context. The City Council recently approved a zoning code update requiring any new pickleball court on public property to be sited at least 250 feet from any residential property, measured from the center of the court. The ordinance applies to new courts in parks but does not extend to private property, a distinction that matters as Torrance continues to field interest in expanded court infrastructure.

That expansion could include Columbia Park. The City has engaged a design consultant to evaluate roughly nine acres of Southern California Edison right-of-way land there; if park activation and development are approved for that parcel, dedicated pickleball courts would be considered based on public input.

In the meantime, Torrance continues to offer free temporary lined-and-netted courts at six locations, including Wilson, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Permanent free public courts are also available at Wilson Park, Walteria Park, and Sur La Brea Park. Players looking for indoor options can access the drop-in program at Dee Hardison Sports Center, which runs Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $5 per day, with a 24-person daily cap and advance registration required through REC.US. Pickleball classes across all levels are listed at Torrance.Rec.us.
