Central Coast residents can learn how to replace synthetic toiletries with eco-friendly alternatives at a free workshop titled Protect Your Pipes: Chemical Free Skin Care, scheduled for Wednesday, January 21 from 1 to 3pm at the Wyoming Community Centre, 147 Maidens Brush Road, Wyoming NSW 2250.

Facilitated by Synergy Permaculture Australia on behalf of Central Coast Council Water & Sewer, the workshop will focus on reducing toxic synthetic chemicals and microplastics that can harm both bodies and pipework. Participants will make three personal care items during the two-hour, hands-on session: a Gentle Oatmeal Facial Scrub, a Nourishing Hand Moisturiser and Beautiful Bath Bombs. Attendees will also receive a comprehensive handout with recipes to recreate the products at home.

The program is aimed at teenagers and adults aged 13 and above; all teenagers must be accompanied by an adult. The workshops are offered at no charge to Central Coast residents, and bookings are essential via events.humanitix.com. Space is limited, so early registration will increase the chance of securing a spot.

The practical focus aims to deliver immediate value to attendees. By learning recipes and techniques to make their own products, participants can reduce household exposure to potentially harmful additives, avoid microplastics that pass into wastewater systems, and limit the chemical load that can affect local water infrastructure. The take-home products and printed recipes are intended to lower barriers for people wanting to continue making safer personal care items at home.

Beyond individual benefits, the initiative ties personal choices to broader community outcomes. Reducing synthetic ingredients and microplastics at the source helps protect local waterways and lessen strain on sewer systems. The workshop creates an entry point for people curious about DIY skin care and sustainable living, while offering a social, practical environment to experiment with simple formulations.

For Central Coast residents interested in attending, register through events.humanitix.com to confirm your place. The two-hour session provides materials and instruction, so participants can leave with finished products, written recipes and the confidence to make more at home.
