Pioneer launches solar-electric PY60 catamaran ahead of Cannes debut

Pioneer Yachts put the first PY60 solar-electric catamaran, Pioneer One, in the water at its shipyard in Stralsund, Germany. The 18m yacht is now set to begin an extensive sea-trial program before its Cannes debut, moving the project from build-stage promise into a live test of how a solar-electric multihull performs on the water.

The launch follows a tight build timeline that has kept the PY60 in the news through the summer. In early June, Ocean Magazine said the first hull of Pioneer Yachts’ flagship PY60 was nearing completion, and on July 9 Yachting Pages identified the first unit as Pioneer One. PowerBoat.World also tied the debut to September 2026 show timing, underlining how closely Pioneer Yachts is lining up the boat’s public rollout with the major autumn boat-show calendar.

For catamaran buyers, the PY60 lands in a part of the market that is changing fast. Solar-electric propulsion gives the boat a different ownership pitch from a conventional luxury cruising cat: less dependence on fuel, quieter operation and a stronger sustainability story. It also shifts the comparison points that matter most, because owners will be weighing range tradeoffs, charging strategy and onboard power management alongside the usual questions of volume, comfort and finish.

That matters most on an 18m platform, where a catamaran has to do more than look modern on the dock. The PY60’s solar-electric setup puts practical cruising questions front and center, from how it supports house loads to how it fits real passage planning. In the low-emission cruising segment, that combination is becoming a more serious buying conversation, especially for owners who want an efficient multihull without stepping away from proper cruising use.

Cannes gives Pioneer Yachts the stage it wants. A debut there puts the PY60 in front of brokers, media and prospective owners at one of the busiest points in the yachting calendar, when innovation and efficiency are being compared side by side across the multihull field. The launch now has to answer the same question buyers are asking across the market: whether solar-electric catamarans are ready to stand as a practical ownership choice, or still mainly a premium showcase.
