Puerto Rico lands among BoatBooker’s top Memorial Day boating spots

Puerto Rico’s east coast turned Memorial Day boating into a catamaran-forward route, with Fajardo linking marinas, bio-bays and boat-only cays.

Puerto Rico stood out in BoatBooker’s Memorial Day 2026 rankings because its east coast already works like a catamaran itinerary, not just a place to launch one. Fajardo, about 45 minutes from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, sits at the center of that marine circuit, with more than five marinas and Puerto del Rey, which Discover Puerto Rico describes as the largest marina in the Caribbean.

That concentration of docks matters for holiday boaters because it puts reef runs, snorkel stops and island hops within easy reach of the same departure point. Recent boat-booking and tour listings for Fajardo showed the market in full gear, with catamaran products commonly bundling snorkeling, beach time, food and drinks, and routes through the La Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve to Cayo Icacos. For multihulls, that means the day is built around moving between protected water, offshore sand and shallow anchorage rather than simply cruising past the shoreline.

The island’s bioluminescent bays add another layer to the trip. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is one of three bio-bays in Puerto Rico, and Discover Puerto Rico says the glow comes from dinoflagellates and is best seen on moonless nights. That gives the east coast a night run that feels as much like a signature experience as a sunset sail, especially for travelers who want something beyond the standard day charter.

Just offshore, Reserva Natural Cayos de la Cordillera reinforces why Puerto Rico keeps showing up on boating lists. The group of small islands includes Cayo Icacos and Palominos, is managed by Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, and is reached mostly by boat. Discover Puerto Rico says the reserve sits just off Fajardo and that many local operators sell day excursions there, a tidy fit for catamaran crews looking for clear water, beach time and marine life in one loop.

The boating appeal also lands within a wider waterfront identity. The National Park Service says San Juan National Historic Site and La Fortaleza were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, underscoring how Puerto Rico’s coastline blends preserved harbor history with active marine tourism. In that context, Memorial Day is less a one-off spike than a reminder of how firmly the island’s east coast has built its boating identity around marinas, cays, reef routes and charter-ready water.
