Julius Meinl has expanded its international Barista Cup for 2026 to national rounds across 17 countries, with the Grand Finale scheduled at the company's Vienna headquarters on 4 September 2026. The Viennese roaster, founded in 1862 and now run by the fifth generation of the Meinl family, first launched the competition in 2024 with 12 participating countries. Five have been added for this edition: Serbia, Germany, Slovenia, China and Hungary.

Christina Meinl, the fifth-generation family member behind the expansion, framed the growth directly: "The inaugural Julius Meinl Barista Cup in 2024 was an incredible moment to celebrate the passion and expertise baristas brought to the competition. Their dedication was truly inspiring. We are thrilled to relaunch the Julius Meinl Barista Cup in 2026, welcoming five additional countries and continuing to champion baristas on a global stage."

National competitions will run from April through July 2026 across Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Czech Republic, Georgia, Italy, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, the UAE, the USA, Serbia, Germany, Slovenia, China and Hungary. The format follows the same structure established in 2024: eligible baristas must be over 18, work at an outlet serving Julius Meinl coffee, and reside in or hold citizenship of the country where they compete. Applications go through the Julius Meinl website, with top candidates selected to compete before a panel of expert judges.

Judging covers three categories — Espresso, Cappuccino and Signature Drink — with competitors assessed on technical skills, creativity and their interpretation of Julius Meinl's Gloriette Gold blend, part of The Originals Bio Fairtrade double-certified range. That last criterion is new framing for 2026, putting a specific house coffee at the center of the creative challenge rather than leaving blend choice open.

On the equipment side, the competition is backed by a sponsor lineup that gives participants access to gear most café-floor baristas only read about. Competitors will work on SCA-certified Rancilio Specialty RS1 espresso machines paired with Fiorenzato F83 E Pro grinders. BWT handles water purification and mineralization, while Cafetto serves as the official cleaning products partner. Andreea Postolache, Global Marketing Product Director at Julius Meinl, has been clear that equipment access is intentional: "Education is a big focus of the project, and it is important to us that our competing baristas can train and compete with the best tools and equipment."

The prize structure gives national winners more than a trophy. The top-scoring barista overall from each country earns a trip to Julius Meinl's Vienna headquarters and a spot at the Grand Finale, with a representative from their outlet invited along as part of the prize package. At the Grand Finale itself, the top scorer in each category wins a trip to a coffee country of origin — framed in 2026 coverage as an opportunity to experience coffee culture and sustainable cultivation practices firsthand. Julius Meinl's 2024 competition materials specifically named Mexico as that destination; the 2026 materials describe the prize more broadly as a "coffee country of origin" without specifying which one.

With over five million cups of Julius Meinl coffee served daily across hospitality settings worldwide, the competition is positioning itself as the roaster's most direct investment in the baristas behind that volume. The national rounds opening in April will determine who gets to Vienna in September.
