Missouri cricket league adds IPL-style auction for 2026 season

American Cricket Academy and Club of St Louis put an IPL-style auction at the center of the 2026 American Franchise Cricket League, with a live auction set for May 18, 2026 at 7 p.m. CST and a separate U23 auction set for May 19, 2026 at 7 p.m. CST. For St. Louis-area cricket, that changed the league from a straight registration-and-draft setup into something closer to a franchise market, where player value is shown in public.

AFCL’s published 2026 calendar gave the format more weight. The league listed U14 for June 15-18 at ACAC Park in St. Louis, U23 for July 9-12, and U17 for July 14-17. It also described itself as a top-tier youth tournament and said registration was ongoing, with a separate post opening U14 registration for competition at ACAC Park. That places the auction inside a full season, not a one-off showcase.

In practical terms, the auction changes roster strategy fast. Clubs have to decide whether to push resources toward proven older players, promising youth, or specialists who can swing tight matches. That is a different calculation from a simple sign-up process, because the bidding itself becomes part of how squads are built and how talent is ranked. For players, especially in U17 and U23 cricket, the upside is visibility. A good season can put a name on the board in a way a private selection meeting never does.

It also changes how the league feels to watch. Families and players can follow squad formation as a public event, which makes the road to the summer fixtures easier to track than a closed administrative process. The league had already set a live draft for April 25, 2026 at 7 p.m. Central, so the auction added another layer to player acquisition rather than replacing the whole system. That combination points to a more formalized franchise model, with multiple checkpoints before the first ball is bowled.

American Cricket Academy’s own materials fit that direction. The organization describes itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on coaching and player development, which helps explain why a more structured league format would sit naturally inside its mission. Its St. Louis base at ACAC Park also gives the competition a fixed home, something local cricket has often lacked when events move from field to field.

The bigger signal is that Missouri cricket is borrowing from the same playbook now moving through larger competitions abroad. The Hundred in England has announced a switch to IPL-style player auctions for 2026, and AFCL’s move puts St. Louis into that same lane. In a local scene built on community and development, the auction makes roster building part strategy, part spectacle, and part public measure of where each player stands.
