Celtic Knot Designer Launches Shamrock Pillow Pattern for Spring Crocheters
Jennifer E. Ryan's Celtic Shamrock Pillow CAL kicks off today, a free four-week spring project built on her signature Celtic knot technique in cotton yarn.

Jennifer E. Ryan, the award-winning designer behind Celtic Knot Crochet, launched her Celtic Shamrock Pillow pattern yesterday, opening a four-week crochet-along that brings her signature interlaced knot construction to a spring cushion project worked entirely in cotton yarn.
The CAL began today, April 4, and runs through April 24 on her Celtic Knot Crochet blog, with weekly posts dropping each Friday. A fifth milestone on May 1 is reserved for finished-object photo sharing. The release unfolds in four parts: Week 1 covers supplies and crocheting the cords; Week 2 moves into weaving the Celtic knot; Week 3 introduces the two pillow base squares; and Week 4 handles assembly and finishing. Each segment is supported by a video tutorial on her YouTube channel and newsletter reminders for subscribers.
Ryan has described the pillow as a good first knot project for makers new to her modular techniques, making it accessible to intermediate beginners while still delivering the interlaced construction her audience expects. Cotton is again her material of choice, a recurring call across her bag and cushion projects for its structural integrity in woven and interlaced designs.
The project follows directly from her Celtic Knot Crochet Bag CAL, which ran February 14 to March 14, 2025, also built from basic stitches, cotton yarn, and a modular multi-week free-pattern structure. The Shamrock Pillow functions as a seasonal sequel, timed to carry the Celtic cultural momentum of early spring into April.
Ryan has been designing for approximately a decade and teaching for more than 15 years, earning placements in Crochet World magazine, AllFreeCrochet, and I Like Crochet, and teaching at events including the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival and through the Crochet Guild of America. Her connection to Celtic tradition runs deep: she has described a "life-long love affair with all things Irish," and in 2016 she traveled to Ireland as the celebrity instructor on a dedicated crochet tour. She learned the craft around age 8, taught by an elderly neighbor. Her 2021 Celtic Knot Square, created in collaboration with Moogly founder Tamara Kelly, broadened her reach beyond her own platform, and she contributed Block 10 to the MooglyCAL 2025.
The Shamrock Pillow CAL is already listed in 2026 roundups by aggregator sites including Oombawka Design Crochet, extending its visibility beyond Ryan's existing following. The pattern is free in its weekly blog format; a paid PDF version with ad-free, large-print formatting is available through her Etsy shop for makers who prefer a consolidated download, consistent with the model she used for the Celtic Knot Crochet Bag.
CALs have proven to be among the most effective formats for building maker communities and sustaining project commitment. TL Yarn Crafts' Crochet Academy CAL has drawn nearly 50,000 participants since its 2021 launch, and the MooglyCAL, running continuously since 2014, is considered a possible candidate for the longest-running online crochet-along ever. That momentum reflects broader craft growth: the number of people who crochet has reportedly increased by more than 200% in recent years, the majority of practitioners are now under 35, and the global knitting and crochet market is estimated at USD 10.1 billion in 2025, projected to reach USD 17.9 billion by 2034.
Ryan has noted that anyone can join the CAL at any time, with each weekly pattern segment remaining live on the page for makers who pick it up late.
