Free Stashbusting Bucket Bag Pattern Kicks Off Fantastical BagtastiCAL Crochet Along
Turn your leftover acrylic into a bag that actually holds its shape - Underground Crafter's free Stashbusting Bucket Bag opens the new Fantastical BagtastiCAL with durability baked in from the start.

Stash yarn, meet your purpose. Marie Segares of Underground Crafter published her free Stashbusting Bucket Bag pattern on March 30, 2026, launching the opening round of CAL Central Crochet's Fantastical BagtastiCAL Crochet Along with a design built to be carried, not admired from a shelf.
The bucket silhouette was chosen with intention. "I decided on a bucket bag because they can hold a lot but the shape is flexible, expanding easily but also getting flatter pretty easily," Segares wrote in the pattern post. That same flexibility makes it a natural fit for a project bag hauling WIPs to a crochet meetup, a market tote, a drawstring bag, or a casual shoulder carry, depending on how you finish the straps and closure.
For yarn, the pattern calls for two strands of medium weight acrylic held together throughout, which builds the fabric weight equivalent of bulky without requiring a dedicated bulky purchase. That doubles as an ideal use case for those half-skeins and color remnants accumulating in project bins. Makers who prefer a single-strand approach can substitute any bulky weight yarn from stash directly. The double-strand construction also contributes to the structural integrity Segares built into the rest of the design: the pattern includes bag feet to protect the base from everyday wear, reinforced straps to prevent stretch and drooping under load, and hardware choices that let makers dial in the level of polish. Even the buttons came from a sustainable source, with Segares noting she sourced second-hand ones from local craft supply stores, keeping material costs low without sacrificing finish quality.
A preview video on the pattern page lowers the barrier to starting, and the free pattern itself sits further down the same page, meaning zero additional clicks between discovery and casting on.
The BagtastiCAL launch is the latest in Segares' long-running collaboration with CAL Central Crochet, a community hub that has previously hosted the annual Holiday Stashdown CAL, a series now in its eleventh year as of 2025, alongside this year's You've Got Options CAL (twelve free squares released on Mondays from January through March). The bag-focused CAL represents a shift from the squares-and-blankets format toward wearable, functional makes, a category Segares has long advocated for: she has written that bags are "relatively small projects" that are "great for trying out new techniques" and can be used "year round."
For makers juggling a bulging stash and a need for practical carry options before warmer months arrive, the Stashbusting Bucket Bag offers a clear build path with enough customization that no two finished bags need look alike. The BagtastiCAL community cadence, with shared hashtags and progress check-ins, means the pattern will generate a steady stream of makes to scroll for colorway inspiration throughout the series.
