MJ's Off The Hook Releases Butterfly Kisses Overlay Mosaic Blanket Pattern
Emma designed the Butterfly Kisses Mosaic Blanket for her daughter Rose, and now MJ's Off The Hook is sharing the overlay mosaic pattern with the wider crochet world.

A blanket made for a granddaughter is now available to everyone. MJ's Off The Hook Designs released the Butterfly Kisses Mosaic Blanket pattern on March 20, 2026, a design with a distinctly personal origin: "This blanket was designed by my daughter Emma for her daughter Rose, and it turned into such a stunning piece that we knew we had to share it," wrote Michelle Moore, the brand's owner.
The finished blanket measures 50 inches by 60 inches and works up in overlay mosaic crochet, a technique that builds detailed imagery through simple stitches worked into rows below. Here, the butterfly motifs take shape by working modified double crochet stitches two rows below the working row, creating the layered, dimensional look the technique is known for. The sample pairs Red Heart Super Saver Ombre for the gradient butterflies against a solid white background: "Red Heart Super Saver Ombre creates a beautiful gradient effect through the butterflies, while a contrasting white background makes the design pop."
Construction is flat in rows, worked at worsted weight using a US I/9 (5.5mm) or US G+/7 (4.5mm) hook. The Ravelry listing specifies approximately 1,370 yards of the white background yarn and 1,551 yards of the ombre color, though buyers planning yarn purchases should verify those figures directly against the current listing, as the stated ball counts and per-skein yardages don't reconcile neatly in the printed specs.
One of the more practical wins in the construction is the finish. "The blanket is finished with a clean double border that neatly encloses all of the mosaic tails, eliminating the need to weave in ends," the pattern description reads. That envelope border, which sandwiches a back-side border and a front-side border together, is a standard solution in overlay mosaic work but one that newer mosaic crafters often struggle to find guidance on. The pattern includes a step-by-step video tutorial link covering the technique, along with a written chart and full instructions in Standard American Terms.
The skill level is intermediate, and the pattern is explicit that buyers should already be comfortable reading crochet patterns before purchasing. Stitches in play include foundation single crochet, back loop only single crochet, front loop only double crochet, and the anchored FLO double crochet, a specialized mosaic stitch that carries unworked yarn across stitches while also catching the front loop one row below. A tutorial for that specific stitch is linked within the pattern. For those who want a fully reversible fabric instead of the standard striped backside, a separate reversible tutorial is referenced as well.
The pattern is sold as a PDF digital download through MJ's Off The Hook Designs' Ravelry store, English only, with no returns on digital products. Upon purchase, buyers receive written instructions, a chart, a video tutorial link, and a yarn substitution list. The pattern does not include step-by-step photos.
