Huntsville’s free Fitness in the Park series is back for 2026, and the most dog-friendly stop lands June 6 with Downward Dog Yoga with Sheila and Huntsville Animal Services at Butler Green, 2620 Clinton Ave. W. The class runs from 9 to 10 a.m., is free, and is open to anyone 16 and older, with minors required to attend with an adult.

The city’s Saturday lineup began May 2 with Kardio Dance Fitness with Karissa at Big Spring Park West, then the Mayor’s Bike Ride, and continues every Saturday morning through June 13. Each session runs from 9 to 10 a.m. and rotates to a different park, giving the series a different feel each week with classes that include Pilates & Balance Fusion, Pure Barre, Zumba, a Fitness Court Workout, and the final June 13 Mommy & Me Strength Class with PhysioPhit at Legacy Park, 6001 Cecil Fain Dr.

That rotating schedule is part of the draw. Wellness and Fitness Coordinator Kevin Ready said the variety is meant to give people of different fitness levels a chance to try something new, while Parks and Recreation Director James Gossett said the classes help residents explore different park spaces and experience Huntsville’s outdoor resources. The city says every class includes modifications and can be done at each participant’s own pace, which makes the series approachable for beginners and for anyone looking for a lower-pressure way to get moving outdoors.

The dog yoga stop stands out because it folds a civic animal-services partner into a mainstream fitness calendar instead of treating pet involvement like a novelty. Huntsville Animal Services says it provides sheltering, enforcement, prevention services, humane education and outreach, and care, veterinary care and placement services for nearly 20,000 companion animals each year. Putting that work alongside a public yoga class gives the June 6 session a clear local purpose: fitness, park use and animal outreach in one morning.

Healthy Huntsville, led by Mayor Tommy Battle, has promoted the series as part of a broader push for healthy eating and active lifestyles. The initiative is sponsored by the City of Huntsville, Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville City Schools, HudsonAlpha and the Huntsville-Madison County Health Department, and the city ties the effort to Alabama’s 39.9% obesity rate in 2021. If weather turns bad, classes move under the covered area behind Huntsville Utilities, keeping the free Saturday routine intact.
