Mackenna Tolfa, a 2018 graduate of Green Bay's Preble High School, is performing as "The Rockstar" on the North American tour of the Blue Man Group, a role that marks a historic milestone for the long-running performance troupe, as Tolfa became the first featured female musician and drummer in the show's history.

"It is an indescribable feeling, truly," Tolfa told FOX 29's Kamryn Scrivens. "I truly didn't understand until far too late in my life the importance of representation." "So to be one of the first people in this extremely unique setting where I'm playing really a lead character role as a drummer and a female is a dream come true."

With Tolfa taking on the character of "The Rockstar" throughout the evening, the Blue Man Group moved beyond its PVC-pipe practice and into its own self-designed percussion instruments, including the Chimeulum, Pipeulum, Snorkelbone and Tone Spokes. Performing as "The Rockstar," she takes on a central role that helps drive the show's energy and sound. Tolfa described the character in her own words: "She's this really strong, empowering character and she's really carrying the energy of the show. The music is sort of the Blue Man's way of speaking, and she is very much a part of that and creating the energy."

The origin story behind that energy traces back to a family living room in Green Bay. Her early exposure to music came through family gatherings filled with polka, where she first learned to play drums as a young child. "When I was younger my uncle, who is from Milwaukee and is German, and I, would play polka music together," Tolfa recalled. Years later, that passion led her to study classical percussion at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, a path that ultimately brought her to the Blue Man Group stage. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Music under the mentorship of Fernando Meza.

Tolfa landed the role during her final year of college after walking into an audition with few expectations. Her journey to this role began with an audition in 2022, and she started performing in the world tour version of the show before bringing the role to the United States. She performed with Blue Man Group at the iconic London Palladium Theatre as part of their World Tour, becoming the first female drummer to be featured in the show's history.

Her University of Minnesota percussion professor saw it coming. The School of Music congratulated Tolfa on winning the role of the DJ, described as a new featured female drummer for the tour. Professor Fernando Meza offered his own assessment: "Mackenna's endless curiosity in music is in full display with this appointment to the Blue Man Group! She's never been satisfied with the status quo and is always searching for her voice in the musical arena."

For Tolfa, the role carries weight beyond the drum kit. She approaches the show every night "just hoping that all of them see this new character and they think that can be them someday," referring to the young girls in the audience. Her advice to her younger self is direct: "Don't give up on your dreams. Listen to your mom and dad when they tell you to keep practicing. It's like, it's worth it. It'll pay off in the end."

About 20 Preble High School students, along with 25 administrators from the Wisconsin School Music Association, attended Tolfa's Milwaukee performance, and following the show, students participated in a special Q&A with Tolfa and members of the Blue Man Group. The North American tour's Milwaukee stop ran February 17 and 18 at the Miller High Life Theatre, followed by Philadelphia's Miller Theater from February 24 through March 1.

In addition to her work with Blue Man Group, Tolfa has held the drum chair for multiple Broadway national tours, including Mean Girls and The Book of Mormon. That résumé, built from polka roots and classical training, is now attached to one of live performance's most recognizable brands, and a generation of young drummers got to watch it from the front row.
