Concept artist Anna Podedworna pulled back the curtain on her cover for Ravenloft: The Horrors Within at GAMA Expo today, placing Strahd von Zarovich front and center in what Wizards of the Coast promptly called "peak" artwork. The reveal arrived as part of a broader D&D 2026 roadmap announcement, with the Ravenloft sourcebook joining several other products unveiled on the same day.

Alongside Podedworna's primary cover, an alternate cover by Pam Wishbow was also released. The full preview drop included artwork from six additional contributors: Bastien Grivet, Alejandro Pacheco, Matthew G. Lewis, Romain Kurdi, Sylvain Sarrailh, and a separate Castle Ravenloft piece. Wargamer's Mollie Russell described an "enormous new piece of Strahd von Zarovich art" among the previews, though she was quick to note that striking artwork is "no guarantee we'll see a new stat block" given Strahd was already updated in Vecna: Eve of Ruin. Enworld forum users were less restrained in their enthusiasm, with TravDoc42 writing "Loving the Lovecraft imagery!!!" and Artamo adding "Yeah the artwork is top notch."

Podedworna is no stranger to Ravenloft covers. She previously illustrated the cover for Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft in 2021, a piece that has since been released as a giclée fine art print through Cook and Becker, hand-numbered with an embossed D&D logo and certificate of authenticity.

As for what's inside the book, the official product description promises a substantial expansion of player options: "Ravenloft: The Horrors Within will deliver more player options like new horror-themed subclasses, species, backgrounds, and Dark Gift feats. It will also deliver content around Darklords and Domains of Dread, as well as dozens of Fearsome Mist Denizens, including potential allies like the iconic Rudolph van Richten. The Horrors Within is a complete package for DMs to build a horror-themed campaign, with content that spans multiple subgenres like gothic, dark fantasy, cosmic, the occult and more."

Early preview material surfaced on Reddit points to four new playable species: Dhampir, Hexblood, Lupin, and Reborn. The Dhampir is notable for having previously existed as a digital-only option inside the D&D Beyond release Asterion's Book of Hungers, suggesting some Beyond-exclusive content may have a path to print after all. Reddit posts also claim an early preview reveals Cthulhu as a Darklord with 385 HP and a spell save DC of 25, implying a CR of around 25, though that information has not been corroborated by any official source and should be treated as unconfirmed.

A companion Tarokka Deck, designed in the style of tarot cards, will release alongside the book and is expected to serve as a storytelling tool for DMs running campaigns in the setting, echoing its role in The Curse of Strahd. Ravenloft has been a cornerstone of D&D since its debut in 1990's Ravenloft: Realm of Terror, with the setting's fanbase surging again after The Curse of Strahd dropped in 2016.

Pre-orders open April 13. D&D Beyond subscribers get early digital access on June 2, with the global street date set for June 16, 2026.
