D&D Beyond’s June drop includes a must-have defensive spell for tanks

Tortoise Shell is the rare defensive spell that actually changes how a fight plays at the table. A willing target gets a +3 bonus to AC while it stays still, then drops to +1 if it moves until the start of its next turn, which makes positioning the whole trick instead of an afterthought. That matters most for front-line characters who want enemies to come to them, not chase them: shield-bearing tanks, ranged defenders holding a lane, and any party that likes to set a line and make monsters pay for crossing it.

D&D Beyond slotted the level 2 spell into its June drop alongside Searing Orb and Void Star, with the full package also including three new magic items, four celestial horror monster stat blocks, and five horror maps. The best fit for Tortoise Shell is obvious once you picture a real encounter: a narrow corridor, a doorway fight, a bridge, or a room where the party needs one character to stand in the bad guy’s face and refuse to budge. Artificers, Druids, and Rangers can all use it, and Bards can reach it through Magical Secrets, which widens the pool for characters who already live and die by action economy and terrain.

That usefulness is exactly why the June drop feels more important than a flashy monthly perk that vanishes after one look. D&D Beyond launched Drops in May 2026 as a weekly source of play-ready content for Hero Tier and Master Tier subscribers, and it opened with more than 500 listings, including 125 maps, 250 reveals, 10 stickers, and 11 player options. The company says Drops is meant to complement books, not replace them, but the pitch is clear enough: give subscribers small pieces that are immediately usable, not just digital shelf space.

The broader library backs that up. The Drops hub promises weekly ready-to-play encounters and quickplay maps on Maps VTT, along with 150-plus cosmetic perks and 250-plus VTT components. D&D Beyond also moved quickly on June 11, saying Master Tier subscribers can now share the Drops library through content sharing and that yearly Drops bundles will hit the marketplace every May so non-subscribers can buy the previous year’s content. That makes Tortoise Shell more than a neat spell pick-up: it is the kind of free or subscriber-accessible tool that can shape a build, lock down a lane, and make the rest of the table breathe easier when the initiative dice hit the tray.
