Telluride gondola set to reopen May 21 for summer season
Telluride’s free gondola is down for spring maintenance and will reopen May 21, restoring the 12-minute link between town and Mountain Village.

Telluride’s free gondola is in its spring off-season closure, which means the fast, car-free connection between Telluride and Mountain Village is off the board until May 21. For anyone planning hikes, bike rides, restaurant stops or a stay built around moving easily between the two towns, that reopening date is the key trip-planning marker.
When it returns for summer service, the system will run through October 25, 2026. The gondola links Telluride and Mountain Village in about 12 minutes and is described as the first and only free public transportation system of its kind in the United States. It has four main stations: Telluride Station on Oak Street, San Sophia Station at mid-mountain, Mountain Village Station and Market Plaza Station near the parking garage and town center.

The practical impact is simple: if the gondola is part of your route into trail access, lodging or dinner plans, do not count on it during the spring shoulder season. The system closes briefly each spring and fall for maintenance and other operational needs, so this shutdown is normal, not a surprise. For now, build around walking in town, using your car when needed, and timing arrivals and departures so you are not stranded on the wrong side of the valley waiting for service that will not restart until late May.

Once open, the ride climbs at about 11 mph from town to roughly 10,500 feet over Coonskin Ridge, with wide views across the San Juan Mountains. In summer, the cabins swap ski racks for bike racks, and the system keeps moving strollers, wheelchairs and leashed pets in dedicated accessible and pet cabins. Since it began running in December 1996, the gondola has carried skiers, bikers, hikers, festivalgoers and commuters by the millions, and its seasonal return again resets how people move through Telluride for the summer ahead.
