GTA: Vice City Stories has been locked to PSP and PS2 hardware for twenty years, and Rockstar never showed any intention of changing that. A modding collective called White Trash Games just decided to fix that themselves, announcing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories — 20th Anniversary Edition, an unofficial reverse-engineered native PC port targeting a 2026 release.

The team's announcement statement set the tone clearly: "Our team decided to take matters into our own hands and give new players the opportunity to get acquainted with this game, and veterans the chance to once again immerse themselves in the neon atmosphere of the 'City of Vice' on a popular platform." They published a trailer on YouTube to back it up, with Blondie's "Heart of Glass" playing in the background, which fits the Vice City aesthetic about as perfectly as anything could.

Unlike Liberty City Stories, which eventually made it to mobile and later into the GTA+ library, Vice City Stories never got a second life on any modern platform. White Trash Games is targeting the full 2007 PS2 version as the foundation for the port, which means PC players would get content that was absent from the PSP release entirely. On top of that, the team is restoring previously cut content that never made it into any prior version of the game. The port will support keyboard and mouse, with controller support also confirmed. Whether it will extend to gyro and trackpad inputs for Steam Deck users is still undecided.

Performance targets are 60 FPS, which the team has explicitly promised. The 4K situation is less clear-cut. GTA BOOM and RockstarINTEL both describe the project as a "4K 60FPS port," while Gameranx pushed back on that characterization, noting it does not appear the team is actually upscaling to 4K and pointing to the limitations of the original RenderWare engine as the likely reason. The port is also being built with several language options, though which languages are finalized has not been specified.

As for timing, Gameranx pointed to the original game's October release month as a likely window for the port's debut. GTA BOOM confirmed the team is working toward a 2026 target, which aligns with October being a realistic milestone if development holds.

The project sits in the same precarious legal territory as every high-profile fan port before it. GTA BOOM noted the central concern directly: whether Take-Two will attempt to shut the project down before it ships or push it off major distribution platforms. The modding community has watched Take-Two move against projects like alt:V's online mod and others, so the question of whether White Trash Games can get this across the finish line before any legal pressure arrives is not a small one.
