Microsoft confirmed on April 2 that Grand Theft Auto V is being pulled from Xbox Game Pass, with both the Enhanced and Legacy editions set to leave the service on April 15, 2026. The exit closes a record twelve-month stay, the longest of the game's four visits to the subscription service.

GTA V joined Game Pass on April 15, 2025, making this a full twelve-month stint. That's unprecedented for Rockstar's catalog: every previous time Rockstar placed GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, or any other title in an Xbox or PlayStation subscription service, the run lasted a maximum of six months. Prior visits were considerably shorter, four months each in 2020 and 2021, and six months from July 2023 to January 2024. The April 2025 return also marked the first time GTA V became available to PC Game Pass subscribers, not just console members, expanding the game's reach considerably compared to earlier appearances. Rockstar timed that April 2025 return to coincide with the PC Enhanced version's release.

Subscribers who have been accessing GTA V or GTA Online through Game Pass without owning the title will need to purchase it to keep playing after April 15. Microsoft has made that transition easier: discounts of at least 20 percent are already live for Game Pass members until the April 15 deadline, with GTA V discounted further as part of the Xbox Spring Sale 2026.

For the modding community, the delisting doesn't touch mod distribution or availability directly. The larger concern is volume: Game Pass has functioned as a zero-barrier entry point for casual players discovering Los Santos for the first time. A reduction in subscribers can thin player populations on community servers and modded environments, even without any change to the underlying files.

The removal is also hard to read as random timing. GTA VI is officially scheduled for November 19, 2026, placing GTA V's April 15 exit exactly seven months before the most anticipated release in the franchise's history. Pulling GTA V from the subscription library positions Rockstar's existing catalog as a purchase just as franchise attention is peaking.

GTA V is one of five titles leaving Game Pass in April 2026. The deadline is ten days out.
