Electro-Harmonix revives the lost Dual Op-Amp Big Muff circuit

Electro-Harmonix has brought the Deluxe Big Muff Pi 2 into the Big Muff family as a Dual Op-Amp Fuzz, and it is being framed as a resurrection of a lost circuit rather than just another colorway. The company’s blog calls it “The Lost Muff Released!”, which tells you exactly where this pedal sits: squarely in the lane of the most chased-after Big Muff voicings, but with enough extra control to matter on a board in 2026.

That mix of old and new is the point. The Big Muff name has always meant thick sustain, heavy compression, and that familiar mid-scooped fuzz voice that has powered everything from arena rock to doom and noise. Electro-Harmonix’s Deluxe Big Muff Pi manual says the pedal started with the “beloved NYC Big Muff Pi” and added “select new features,” while keeping the familiar Sustain, Tone, and Volume controls. The real upgrade is the fully parametric MIDS EQ, with variable frequency sweep and boost/cut level control, which gives players a way to put the fuzz exactly where a mix can use it instead of where it gets buried.

That is the practical win here. A standard Big Muff can sound enormous on its own and vanish the second a band comes in, especially when the rest of the rig is already crowded. The Deluxe treatment is Electro-Harmonix admitting that classic Muff tone is still the prize, but that modern players often need more than sustain and volume to make it usable live. If you have spent time fighting the scoop with an external EQ or a boost, the appeal is obvious: keep the Muff voice, but make it behave.

The launch also lands with the kind of circuit-specific detail fuzz players care about. Electro-Harmonix has a forum topic titled “Electro-Harmonix Presents the Deluxe Big Muff 2,” and its Big Muff history page points to “Version 2 – ‘RAM'S HEAD’ BIG MUFF (USA circa 1973)” as part of the company’s own lineage map. Alongside the related Deluxe Bass Big Muff Pi 2, described as a “Deluxe Dual Op-Amp Bass Fuzz,” the new pedal looks less like a nostalgia prop and more like a serious attempt to package a revered Muff branch for players who want the history and the extra control.
