A low-ABV British pub ale just gave Arlington Brewing Company one of the loudest possible introductions in craft beer: a World Beer Cup gold for Trafford Ale in the English Mild or Bitter category.

The brewery announced the win on April 29 after the competition’s awards ceremony in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The result landed in a field that helps explain why this medal matters. The 2026 World Beer Cup drew 8,166 entries from 1,644 breweries and cideries across 50 countries, and a panel of 255 judges from 37 countries handed out 353 medals to 273 producers across 118 beer and cider categories. Trafford Ale earned its gold in a category with 64 entries, a difficult place for any small brewery to stand out, especially with a style that rewards balance over spectacle.

Arlington Brewing lists Trafford Ale as an Ordinary Bitter at 3.8% ABV and 30 IBU, built as a British-style pub ale with toasty malt, Fuggles hops and a dense head of smooth, creamy foam. The brewery says it developed the recipe for a friend, Stuart, who wanted a beer that reminded him of home, with the finished beer meant to transport drinkers to Manchester. That kind of restraint is the point. In a competition known for blind judging, a well-made classic can reveal more about a brewer’s precision than a beer loaded with novelty.

Founder and head brewer Tom Allen said the brewery was honored to receive such a prestigious award and said the result reinforces its commitment to crafting world-class beers across a wide range of styles. Allen’s path into brewing gives the win another layer. Arlington Brewing says he spent two decades in robotics and manufacturing engineering before turning his homebrewing into a profession, a background that fits a brewery built around consistency, process control and repeatability.

The medal also arrives at a pivotal moment for a brewery still building its physical home. Arlington Brewing announced in October 2024 that it had secured 15 Ryder St. in Arlington Heights for a planned 15-barrel production brewery with a taproom, full kitchen, outdoor beer garden and private function room. In February 2026, the Arlington Redevelopment Board approved the project in two phases, with the second phase including a 1,000-square-foot addition and a mezzanine level.

Even before a permanent site, Arlington Brewing had been working the community for years through pop-up events, a summer concert series at the Arlington Reservoir and beer sold at restaurants and retailers across greater Boston, from Fenway to Woburn. The World Beer Cup gold now gives that grassroots buildout something many young breweries chase for years: a globally recognized proof point that the basics are being done exceptionally well.
