Defiant Brewing, Pearl River's First Microbrewery, Closes After 21 Years
Defiant Brewing, Pearl River's first microbrewery, announced it will close at the end of March after 21 years of pouring 30 styles of ales and lagers from its smokehouse taproom.

Defiant Brewing Company, the microbrewery and smokehouse that owner and brewmaster Neill Acer built into Rockland County's first craft brewery, will close at the end of March 2026 after 21 years in operation. Acer posted a farewell message to Instagram on March 7, thanking the community and inviting regulars to come in for one last stretch of celebrating before the taps run dry.
The brewery at 6 East Dexter Plaza in Pearl River, situated across the street from the Pearl River train station, built its reputation on roughly 30 styles of house-crafted ales and lagers alongside a smokehouse known for slow-smoked BBQ. Acer's founding vision, as he described it in earlier reporting, was to challenge the conventions of mass-produced beer and to recreate the atmosphere of local pubs in Ireland. The taproom's rustic warehouse feel, with large brew tanks visible in the background, gave it a character that set it apart from the typical suburban bar.
The Instagram farewell captured the texture of two decades in business: "For 21 years, you have shared dates, engagements, weddings, anniversaries, reunions, and fellowship. We are truly humbled to have been a part of your lives — THANK YOU!" The post urged patrons to visit in the coming weeks to "celebrate Defiant with a bang" and closed with a line that has been circulating across local social media ever since: "This is not goodbye. It's simply, until we meet again!"
The announcement triggered an outpouring of responses from longtime regulars. One commenter described Defiant as their "Cheers-kind of spot" since the early days when the business operated out of a smaller space and poured directly from the tanks. Another wrote: "This is so sad. One of my favorite places that I've been going to for 15+ years. You will be missed." A third summed up the sentiment bluntly: "Defiant will be missed, and Pearl River will never be the same."

Beyond the beer, Defiant served as one of those rare community anchors that outlasted the typical lifespan of a small independent brewery. The sprawling taproom and large stage became a reliable venue for local bands, fundraisers, and benefit events. Over two decades, the space absorbed engagements, anniversaries, and more than a few first dates.
No reason for the closure has been stated publicly, and no exact final date in March has been confirmed. Anyone hoping to raise a pint there before last call should check in with the brewery directly for current hours and any scheduled farewell events.
