Wise Man Brewing is stepping out of its self-distribution comfort zone and into a much larger North Carolina footprint. Beginning in June, the Winston-Salem brewery’s beers will be handled by Caffey Distributing Company and United Carolina Beverages across 21 counties, stretching from the Triad into the fast-growing Charlotte market.

For Wise Man, that is more than a new sales map. Moving from self-distribution to outside wholesaler partners changes how a brewery plans production, allocates inventory and keeps brands consistent from account to account. It also signals confidence that demand can support wider shelf and draft placement well beyond the home market where the brewery built its name.

Co-founder and brewmaster Sam Victory has been at the center of Wise Man’s long arc from hobby project to regional brand. Wise Man says Victory started homebrewing in 2005 after buying a kit and experimenting in his kitchen. After entering competitions and collecting hardware, he and his friends Jason and Mike, along with their families, decided to open a brewery. Local listings have described the founding trio as a chemist, lawyer and accountant, a combination that fits a business built as much on discipline as on instinct.

The brewery opened its taproom in January 2017 after an 18-month overhaul of the former Angelo Brothers building in downtown Winston-Salem. Wise Man now operates at 826 Angelo Bros. Ave. in the Downtown Arts District, where its taproom has become a destination built around an ever-changing lineup, food trucks, brewery tours and community events. The new distribution agreement gives that homegrown identity a larger platform.

The two new distribution partners bring serious scale of their own. Caffey says it has served North Carolina for more than 70 years and is based in Greensboro, with business histories tracing the company to 1962. United Carolina Beverages is newer but already sizable, formed from the merger of Carolina Premium Beverage and United Beverages of North Carolina. That merger was announced Feb. 4, 2026, and the combined company began operating as United Carolina Beverages on March 30, 2026.

Victory said the partners showed a genuine understanding of and enthusiasm for the brand during negotiations, a detail that matters in craft beer, where the right wholesaler relationship can be as important as the beer in the tank. For drinkers, the payoff is simple: more Wise Man products on shelves and more Wise Man beer on draft lines across North Carolina. For the brewery, it is a clear sign that a once-local operation is aiming to play at a regional level without losing the independent identity that got it here.
