Dozens to more than a hundred plungers leapt into the river outside Kelleher’s Irish Pub & Eatery in Peoria, turning frigid water and raucous cheers into a fundraiser that organizers say has raised more than $40,000 for Special Olympics Illinois, with one local report putting the total over $47,000 and organizers hoping the tally will climb past $50,000.

Organizers said more than 150 participants registered for this year’s Peoria Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge, though a separate count put actual plungers at more than 80. A local television report, however, listed a total of 152 contestants taking the plunge this year, reflecting differences in how sites and outlets tallied participants at the Feb. 21 event.

Special Olympics Illinois will receive the proceeds to fund year-round sports training, competitions and programming in the area. Bailey Brenner, Director of Region G for Special Olympics Illinois, framed the event as community support: “To build a more inclusive environment is really our sole mission for Special Olympics Illinois. For our athletes to see that local support from their peers and their community, it’s absolutely incredible just to feel that love, that individuals are choosing to come out in freezing temperatures to get into cold water for them to do what they love and play sports.”

The atmosphere mixed revelry and purpose. Hundreds of spectators gathered at Kelleher’s Irish Pub & Eatery as participants dressed in costumes and plunged alongside friends and family, while local television crews documented teams and solo jumps. Bailey Levine, Assistant Director of Development for Region G, called the plunge a playful show of support: “It’s the coolest way, no pun intended, to show support for the athletes and give them more opportunities to not only compete with their friends but become the best version of themselves, but also have opportunities for health, education and leadership training.”

Human-interest moments threaded through the crowd. Bradley University students Noah and Caleb Hollis jumped in; both have two sisters with Down syndrome and recently helped launch BUnified, a student organization focused on inclusion and connecting students with individuals with disabilities. Peoria’s plunge is part of the statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge effort, which local coverage described as the largest fundraiser for Special Olympics Illinois. Peoria has hosted the Polar Plunge for seven years, with the past five taking place at Kelleher’s, while another report called the statewide Polar Plunge tradition the 27th annual. Statewide totals last year topped $3 million and drew more than 10,000 plungers, underscoring how local jumps feed a much larger campaign.

Nearby plunges continued the push. Quincy’s event on Sunday attracted almost 80 participants and organizers there reported more than $13,000 raised before the start, with additional funds collected during the plunge. Organizers in Peoria said final totals remain in flux as donations are still tallied, and they expect the region’s support to convert this weekend’s chilly spectacle into sustained funding for athletes through the year.
