A circle of recessed benches faces inward at the entrance of Sauna House's new downtown Raleigh location, a deliberate design choice that tells you exactly what kind of place this is before you ever step into a sauna. The North Carolina-based Nordic-style bathhouse operator opened its fourth state location and seventh overall in Raleigh this month, betting that a city already crowded with run clubs and yoga studios was ready for something hotter.

The facility centers on contrast therapy, the practice of cycling between hot saunas and cold plunges to boost circulation, recovery, and relaxation. But co-owner James Grogan is quick to point out what sets this location apart from other local options, including SweatHouz, another Raleigh sauna and cold plunge space. "In the normal spots, you get tucked away and have your private little oasis," Grogan said. "Whereas, if you came here, we could be sitting here together, having just met, and so that's part of the charm we're really leaning into."

That social architecture is built into the space at every turn. One communal sauna is intentionally designed brighter and warmer than the others to encourage conversation. Small-group hot rooms and lounge areas scattered throughout give people somewhere to linger between plunges rather than towel off and head for the door.

Grogan frames the Raleigh opening as a natural fit for a city already tilting toward wellness. "Raleigh is very wellness-focused," he said. "I see more run and cycling clubs, yoga studios. People are looking for a place to relax, and [that] comes together in this space to give them a place to get away from it all."

Rather than targeting only athletic recovery or biohacking crowds, Sauna House is positioning itself as a "third place," a social destination sitting somewhere between home and the bar scene. Programming is expected to include social events and guided contrast cycles, with membership options built around repeated ritual rather than one-off visits.

Raleigh's opening follows a wave of community bathhouses taking hold in New York, San Francisco, and Chicago, where the format has evolved from niche wellness offering to mainstream social hub. Once rooted in European and Asian bathing traditions, the communal model is now drawing younger generations who want spaces that blend health routines with genuine connection.

For the Southeast, Sauna House's expansion signals that contrast therapy is no longer just a recovery tool for endurance athletes. When the benches face inward and the sauna is turned up to invite conversation, the cold plunge becomes almost secondary.
