KOLM KONTRAST, the Nordic spa co-founded by Julia Glynn and Landon Goold at Cambie and 8th in Vancouver, launched its April programming around a simple argument: most cold-plunge studios drop you in and step back. Guided infrastructure, they say, is what actually makes contrast therapy a sustained habit.
The centrepiece of the month is a 30-day "Find Your Kolm" challenge, with milestone prizes awarded at five, 10, and 15 completed sessions. Participants who complete the challenge are funnelled toward discounted membership pricing through a free trial path. It reads less like a spa calendar and more like a retention strategy with wellness packaging, which is precisely the point.
The guided sessions pair sauna held between 82°C and 90°C against cold plunges running 0°C to 4°C, with coached transitions, breathwork, and light aromatherapy cues layered in between. The rationale for the coaching layer is grounded in physiology: a two-minute plunge in that temperature range can trigger up to a fivefold increase in norepinephrine, the hormone tied to mood, attention, and anti-inflammatory response. Without instruction on breathing and staged exposure, first-timers frequently abort before getting anywhere near that physiological effect.
"Few offer guidance," the studio's April update noted. "At Kolm, guided sessions combine scientifically backed hot and cold protocols with breathwork, meditation, aromatherapy, and body-based practices that help people move through the experience with more intention."

The programming maps cleanly to different reasons people show up. For recovery, the coached transitions between heat and cold let the nervous system adapt progressively rather than absorb repeated shocks. For stress reduction, the integrated breathwork is the meaningful differentiator over any open-plunge setup where you're essentially guessing. For performance-focused users who want to dial intensity, the structured protocol provides a repeatable baseline to build from rather than improvising each session.
The studio is located at 525 West 8th Avenue, and its name carries the concept through: "Kolm" means "three" in Estonian, anchoring its three core modalities of heat, cold, and breathwork.
