Secrets of Strixhaven previews reveal five precons, Mystical Archive returns

Wizards of the Coast has lifted the curtain on what players will find when Secrets of Strixhaven hits shelves on April 24. Previews and product copy reveal the Mystical Archive bonus sheet is back with English and Japanese frame variants and special foil treatments, five new Commander preconstructed decks tied to the colleges of Strixhaven, and a full product lineup that leans into both collectors and playgroups.

The Mystical Archive is the most consequential detail for collectors and Commander builders. Wizards’ product text promises, “Look for a Mystical Archive spell in every booster!” and confirms Collector Boosters can include “special Japanese-language Mystical Archive cards in Silver Scroll foil, beautiful Borderless cards, or Special Guests cards!” Multiple outlets described an etched or alternate treatment on the new Archive, and Wizards’ Silver Scroll language provides the clearest official cue about premium finishes collectors can chase.

Commander players will get five preconstructed decks, one per college, that position students as leaders rather than guest commanders. StarCityGames summarized the approach: “Following the same formula as its predecessor, Secrets of Strixhaven will have five Commander decks to represent each school faction, but this time, the students have become the leaders.” The decks are named Lorehold Spirit, Prismari Artistry, Quandrix Unlimited, Silverquill Influence, and Witherbloom Pestilence. Early preview images also revealed a handful of mythic cards, including Lorehold, the Historian and Mathemagics!, along with Quintorius, Field Historian illustrated by Bryan Sola.

Uncover the Secrets of Strixhaven and prove your college is the best with every spell you cast.” Flipsidegaming noted narrative returning characters and fresh faces, writing, “One of the biggest confirmed features is the return of the Mystical Archive,” and, “You can expect to see Dina, Rootha Squallheart, and Killian Lu practicing their magic beyond the school walls.”

Context matters: the original Mystical Archive in 2021 carried 63 cards and included Japanese versions of every entry, bringing high-demand reprints such as Demonic Tutor and Time Warp into the spotlight. Draftsim recalled that history and even suggested a sample card pick for the new sheet, offering the opinion, “Stock Up is an excellent way to kick off the bonus sheet, I'd say!” Reddit threads already show community wishlists and speculation about which instants and sorceries will appear.

Secrets of Strixhaven’s release sits alongside a summer crossover product, Magic: The Gathering | Marvel Super Heroes, scheduled for June 26. The Strixhaven product slate covers Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Draft Night kits, Codex Bundles, Bundles, a Beginner Box, Jumpstart Boosters, and Prerelease Packs.
