Wizards reveals more The Hobbit cards at MagicCon Amsterdam

Wizards of the Coast showed off 35 new The Hobbit cards at MagicCon Amsterdam on July 18, giving Commander players their clearest look yet at which Middle-earth legends might actually matter in a 100-card deck.

MagicCon Amsterdam ran July 17 to 19, 2026, at RAI Amsterdam, and the reveal landed in the middle of Wizards’ preview push for Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit. Wizards is already funneling spoilers through its official preview hub, while its collecting article frames the set as a major release, with global launch set for August 14, prerelease expected August 7, and the full card image gallery due July 31.

For Commander, the important part is not just that The Hobbit is a Universes Beyond set. It is that Wizards is not backing it with Commander-specific preconstructed decks, which puts even more weight on the main-set legends and support cards. That shifts the buying question fast: if you want to build around Tolkien characters, the product has to carry its own Commander value instead of handing you a ready-made precon shell.

The revealed cards included Thorin, Bard, Gandalf and Gollum, four names that immediately signal where the long-term EDH interest will land. Polygon’s coverage highlighted those characters among the 35-card batch, and the reveal also introduced mechanic names like Recruit, Storied and Hone. Even before full rules text is everywhere, those names suggest the kind of deckbuilding lanes Commander players care about most: board development, value accumulation and story-driven synergy rather than one-off draft chaff.

EDHREC is already treating The Hobbit as Commander-relevant, with Smaug the Magnificent and Tom, Bert, and William showing up among the commanders being tracked for the set. That is the part to watch if you are deciding whether to preorder, trade, or wait for singles. A crossover set can be full of flavor and still miss on playability, but a reveal that includes marquee legends, recognizable utility, and new mechanics usually means at least a few cards will stick in the format long after the spoiler season ends.

The July 18 panel was not a full card dump, and that is exactly why it matters. With 35 cards now public, Commander players have enough to start sorting The Hobbit into the cards worth building around and the cards worth leaving in the binder, which is the only real test that matters before August 14.
