Bestiarum Games crowns Brood of the Toadmother painting contest winners
Sir_Brude’s swamp scene won Bestiarum’s contest by making the base, palette, and story pull in the same direction.

Sir_Brude’s What’s the story morning glory? won Bestiarum Games’ Brood of the Toadmother painting contest because it did the one thing that separates a good mini from a memorable display piece: every part of the model sold the same swampy story.
The April 2026 contest closed on April 29, 2026, and it asked painters to use something from the newest release within the first three weeks of the month, then post it in Bestiarum’s Discord server. The community narrowed the field to its top three favorites before the Bestiarum team picked the official winner. That format has become a recurring monthly habit, and it keeps the pressure pointed in the right direction: fast turnaround, fresh sculpts, and a finish that can stand up in a public vote.
Sir_Brude’s winning entry leaned hard into that brief. The piece placed an Anuran Shaman among Anuran Totems and a lone Tadpole on a resin-poured puddle base, and that base did a lot of the talking. Instead of treating the model as a separate object, the whole scene read like a slice of The Lost Continent, with the swamp environment, the character, and the tiny supporting pieces working as one composition. That is where dark-fantasy painting is sitting right now. Clean layering still matters, but atmospheric basing and narrative staging have become the real separator.

The competition’s other highlighted entries pointed in the same direction. stephenas1’s Say flies used the same core character but pushed brighter colors and layered texture work while keeping the swamp mood intact. redsme’s Hungry hungry frogs went broader across the range, painting nearly the entire Anuran lineup in a coherent scheme with a scenic backdrop. Different approaches, same lesson: Bestiarum’s current faction design rewards painters who think in environments, not isolated figures.
That emphasis fits Brood of the Toadmother perfectly. Published on March 30, 2026, the release introduced Tepozotli, Matron of the Mirewoods, along with Anuran Hunters, Anuran Warriors, Anuran Shaman, Anuran Tadpoles, and Anuran Totems. Bestiarum frames The Lost Continent as a rain-drenched land of choking jungle, blackwater swamps, ruined stone, and ancient horrors, with Penitent’s Landing as the expedition foothold. The winners translated that setting directly into paint.

Bestiarum rewarded Sir_Brude with a digital miniature release of choice and an honorary title on the server, while runners-up received a digital product of choice. That prize structure keeps these contests focused on the same thing the best hobby pieces always chase: a coherent, story-first finish that looks ready for the display case before it ever reaches the table.
