Back From The Wave Drops Minimal Techno Remix Single With The Populists
Yan Wagner's The Populists remix closes a dark EP on Les Yeux Orange's new OBSCUR catalogue series, with Back From The Wave delivering hypnotic techno-EBM from south-west France.

Yan Wagner, operating under his The Populists moniker, delivered the closing track on a new release from French project Back From The Wave, with "Maximal Minimal (The Populists Remix)" landing on the artist's Bandcamp page and premiering via Les Yeux Orange on SoundCloud.
The release marks a significant moment for Les Yeux Orange, inaugurating the "OBSCUR" side of their catalogue. "We are proud to welcome Back From The Wave once again on the label, inaugurating the 'OBSCUR' side of our catalogue," the label wrote in their premiere copy. The broader EP, framed as a dark, immersive project from the south-west of France, also features a collaboration with Umatik on one track, with both Back From The Wave and Umatik sharing that regional origin.
The original "Maximal Minimal" sits squarely at the intersection that minimal techno heads will recognise immediately. "Sitting at the crossroads of hypnotic techno and EBM, 'Maximal Minimal' is a track that thrives on disorientation, pulling you into the vastness of the dancefloor," the label's premiere notes read. The acid loop at its core is described as "worthy of the finest 90s raves," the kind of stripped-back, pressure-building foundation that defines the minimal end of the spectrum. The EP also includes "Le Bruit des Néons," described as "a relentless EBM weapon, driven by a deep, powerful bassline and retro-futuristic synthetic leads, all wrapped in haunting, lingering pads."
Wagner's remix brings a résumé that speaks for itself. His work under The Populists moniker draws on collaborations with Arnaud Rebotini, Gesaffelstein, and Étienne Daho, and Les Yeux Orange frames this convergence directly: "His numerous collaborations with renowned artists such as Arnaud Rebotini, Gesaffelstein, and Étienne Daho converge here into a shivering, radical, intoxicating and intensely electrifying remix." The title itself, "Maximal Minimal," plays a deliberate conceptual game, juxtaposing two poles of electronic music production philosophy within a single release that leans decisively into the darker, more hypnotic end of the spectrum.
The release is listed on Endless Rotation and is available on Back From The Wave's Bandcamp page.
