MSI's The Canon Series, TM 002 delivers hypnotic minimal techno at 140 BPM

MSI’s The Canon Series - TM 002 landed as a tight, concept-heavy minimal techno release on May 24, 2026, with just three tracks, TM 001, TM 002 and TM 003, carrying the whole weight. Built around a hardware 909 rhythm section, heavy sequencing and deep, undulating pads locked at a steady 140 BPM, it treated restraint as pressure rather than emptiness.

The project sits inside the profile of Marius, the Warsaw, Poland-based artist behind MSI. His Bandcamp bio says he has been passionate about electronic music since 2004, used to DJ on vinyl and share sets on YouTube, and now makes home-produced house, techno and ambient under aliases including Softcode, using Ableton to shape different moods and emotions. That background matters here because TM 002 feels less like a generic club tool and more like a carefully framed studio statement.

The Canon Series itself is pitched as a collection of raw, hypnotic vinyl releases where uncompromising minimal techno meets literature and philosophy. That gives TM 002 a more reflective identity than a standard three-track EP. The numbering, TM 001 through TM 003, reinforces that sense of sequence and method, as if MSI is laying out a set of propositions rather than simply delivering tracks. The result is a release that aims for floor function, but with enough conceptual framing to linger after the mix.

The 909 sits at the center of that effect. Roland says the TR-909 was released in 1983, was its first drum machine to feature MIDI, and combined analog drums with digital hi-hats and cymbals. Roland also marks September 9 as 909 Day for dance-music fans. That history gives TM 002 a loaded backbone, especially because the 909 moved from an initial commercial disappointment to a tool that early house and techno producers could actually get their hands on when second-hand prices fell in the late 1980s. In other words, MSI is not using the machine as a nostalgic badge, but as a working language.

The broader lineage is easy to hear in the framing. Resident Advisor has described Daniel Bell as a minimal techno pioneer and noted that his early-2000s Button-Down Mind mixes helped push techno toward Germanic minimal. The same outlet has also pointed to 1993 as a pivotal year, when techno spread beyond Detroit, while Mixmag has credited Basic Channel and related projects with helping form the dub and minimal techno scene. TM 002 does not try to reinvent that history. It taps into it with a strict 140 BPM frame, a 909-driven pulse and three compact cuts that give MSI’s concept release its physical force.
