NMRA opens registration for 2026 Scenic City Express in Chattanooga

The National Model Railroad Association is promoting registration for the 2026 Scenic City Express at $20, with a $15 one-day pass, as it prepares to bring its national convention to Chattanooga for the first time. The July 27 through August 2, 2026 event will center on the Chattanooga Convention Center and the Chattanooga Marriott Downtown, with the National Train Show set for August 1-2 and open to the public after convention attendees get in first.

For model railroaders deciding whether to build a summer trip around Chattanooga, the draw is the spread of hobby-specific programming. NMRA’s convention listing puts 200-plus hours of clinics on the schedule, along with layout tours, operating sessions, prototype tours, a steam excursion and a Rock City Barn modeling contest. That mix matters because it puts scenery, operations, prototype research and presentation techniques in the same place, giving visitors a chance to compare how other modelers solve track planning, wiring and scenery problems across scales and eras.

The National Train Show adds the other half of the equation. NMRA says the show will feature several hundred booths, product announcements, manufacturer meet-and-greets, hands-on demonstrations and dozens of train layouts. For attendees trying to evaluate new equipment or talk directly with builders and suppliers, that makes the Chattanooga weekend more than a badge pickup. It becomes a buying and learning trip, with the convention schedule and the trade-show floor working together.

The organization is also leaning on the event’s history. NMRA says the National Train Show has been part of its convention structure since 1988 as a combined industry trade show and public train show, and it traces the association itself back to the first National Convention over Labor Day weekend in 1935. The 2026 Chattanooga gathering fits into that long convention arc while marking a fresh stop in a city the group has never used for its national convention.

Attendance trends give the trip another angle. Trains.com reported that the 2025 NMRA National Convention in Novi, Michigan, drew 950 registered attendees, up from 620 in Long Beach, California, in 2024. That kind of rebound gives Chattanooga a clear benchmark as the Scenic City Express heads toward a summer slot that should appeal to anyone who wants clinics, layouts and vendor aisles wrapped into one convention week.
