Leaked 2K post may reveal Wembanyama as NBA 2K27 cover star

A leaked 2K newsroom post may have done more than point to Victor Wembanyama as the NBA 2K27 Standard Edition cover athlete. It also mapped the next NBA 2K cycle with unusual clarity, suggesting a worldwide release on September 4, 2026, Early Access on August 28, and the first real preorder and feature-reveal window arriving in July.

The post briefly surfaced on 2K’s official newsroom before disappearing, and that was enough to send the NBA 2K community into overdrive. With the newsroom visible again and no official NBA 2K27 announcement live, the leak stands as the clearest sign yet of how 2K may be pacing its rollout: announce in July, open preorders soon after, then give players one week of Early Access before the full launch. That cadence would match the pattern 2K used for NBA 2K26, which was unveiled in July 2025 with Early Access on August 29 and a global launch on September 5, as well as NBA 2K25, which was unveiled on July 10, 2024 and launched on September 6.

If the leak is real, Wembanyama fits the cover stage cleanly. He is 22 years old, born January 4, 2004, and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. His résumé already runs from Rookie of the Year to All-Star and All-NBA recognition, plus All-Defensive honors and a Defensive Player of the Year award that made him the youngest winner in NBA history and the first unanimous selection. The Spurs say he averaged 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in 64 games in 2025-26 while leading the league in blocks.

The international case is just as strong. FIBA lists Wembanyama at 15.8 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game at Paris 2024, where he helped France win silver. That kind of two-way profile gives 2K a cover athlete who sells in the United States, France and beyond, especially after the company already leaned on him for NBA 2K Mobile Season 8 and as the face of NBA 2K25 Season 5.

For buyers, the bigger story is timing. If this leak holds, July should be the month when 2K starts lining up its cover reveal, preorder decisions and first feature details, while August 28 becomes the date Early Access players need circled. The Wembanyama rumor is flashy, but the real value is the calendar it seems to expose.
