Fantasy Grounds brings Pathfinder's Howl of the Wild to digital play

Fantasy Grounds has turned Howl of the Wild from a 224-page rulebook into a ready-to-play Pathfinder 2E digital package, and that is the real selling point. At $49.99, the module puts Paizo’s wilderness-heavy book into Fantasy Grounds Unity with support for the remastered rules, which matters when a supplement adds ancestry choices, companions, travel rules, and monster-filled exploration to an online campaign.

Paizo released Howl of the Wild on May 22, 2024 in standard hardcover, special edition hardcover, and PDF, with the hardcover priced at $64.99 and the PDF at $29.99. The book is built around beasts, travel, and exploration rather than city intrigue, and Paizo frames it as a story of a bumbling naturalist and an eccentric crew crossing continents in an airship to hunt for four legendary beasts. That pitch is more than flavor text. It gives a GM a clean campaign spine for a nature-forward arc, whether the table wants survival, monster-hunting, or a long overland trek through Golarion’s farthest reaches.

The rules payload is just as relevant. Paizo says Howl of the Wild added six new playable ancestries, and its preview material and blog posts point to new rules for awakened animals and offbeat concepts like awakened koi. That kind of content can be a headache in a virtual tabletop if the implementation is sloppy, especially once animal companions, archetypes, and wilderness mechanics start stacking up. Fantasy Grounds is selling the module as an officially licensed Pathfinder 2E product for online or local play, which makes the conversion feel less like a PDF wrapper and more like an actual table tool.

There is also the usual Paizo account perk for buyers who already own the PDF. Fantasy Grounds says a linked Paizo.com account can sync the purchase and unlock a discount of up to the cost of the PDF, which lowers the barrier for players already invested in Paizo’s digital ecosystem. Paizo also issued errata around launch, and Pathfinder Society later marked Howl of the Wild as permitted content, including Beastmaster archetype expansion feats after Player Core 2, which tells you the book was not left to sit on the shelf. For groups running a summer campaign or any expedition built around beasts and bad weather, this is the version that puts the book on the table instead of just on the shelf.
