Paizo Reveals 13 Omens, a Rules-Lite Horror RPG With Shared Dice Bag
Paizo’s next game swaps Pathfinder’s crunch for a shared dice bag, and its first big demo is built for one-night horror sessions.

Paizo is taking its sharpest turn away from Pathfinder’s familiar crunch with 13 Omens, a modern supernatural horror RPG built to be rules-lite rather than dense. Erik Mona and Jason Bulmahn are fronting the public reveal, and the pitch is strikingly different from the company’s flagship fantasy line: this is a dark reflection of our world, filled with specters, killers, cursed places and secrets that sound like they belong in a midnight one-shot, not a long campaign binder.
That shift matters because Pathfinder Second Edition, which Paizo launched in 2019, has become one of the deepest, most customizable tabletop RPGs on the market. 13 Omens looks designed for the opposite job. Paizo describes it as an easy-to-learn engine that ramps tension as the story builds toward a terrifying end, which makes it feel aimed at PF2e tables that want a horror side game without a pile of prep, convention players who need something that lands fast, and groups that have bounced off heavier rules sets before.
The hook that will get people talking is the dice system. The UK Games Expo listing says the game uses a shared bag of communal dice, with escalating Omen Dice added as play goes on. That is the kind of table mechanic you can explain in a sentence, then actually feel at the table as the bag gets worse and the odds turn meaner. It is also a clean fit for horror, where pressure should be visible and immediate instead of buried in subsystems.

The same listing says the demo is built as a full three-hour adventure designed to be played in a single evening, and it comes with content warnings and safety tools at the start because character death is extremely likely. That tells you exactly what Paizo is selling here: not a safe little intro scenario, but a tight, disposable horror experience that expects bad things to happen and wants the table ready for them.
Paizo has also started a mailing list for development updates, which suggests 13 Omens is still early in its rollout even as it steps onto a very large stage. UK Games Expo runs 29 to 31 May 2026 at the NEC and Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham, and the convention marks its 20th anniversary year. If Paizo is looking for a test case beyond Pathfinder’s usual d20 gravity, this is it.
