Canon debuts RF 14mm f/1.4L, the fastest ultra-wide, fisheye zoom, limited G7X

Canon launched the RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM prime, an RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L fisheye zoom, and a limited graphite PowerShot G7 X Mark III; the new optics push low-light ultra-wide performance and video-friendly controls.

Canon introduced a trio of releases that reshape options for wide-angle shooters and creator-focused compact users. The headline is the RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM, billed as Canon’s fastest ultra-wide prime, built for hybrid photo and video work with a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) AF system, an 11-blade diaphragm, and a sophisticated optical formula that includes a fluorite element, Blue Spectrum Refractive (BR) optics, UD glass, and multiple aspheric elements. That combination targets sharpness, reduced aberrations, and controlled rendering at very wide apertures.

The RF 14mm f/1.4L is aimed squarely at astrophotographers and landscape shooters who need a very bright, wide field of view. The fast f/1.4 aperture lets users keep exposure times and ISO lower when shooting stars or nightscapes, and the 11-blade diaphragm promises cleaner highlights and starburst character for point light sources. The lens has a bulbous front element, so there are no front filter threads; photographers will need to use rear gel filters for long exposures, neutral density work, or creative filtration. Canon priced the RF 14mm at about $2,599 with availability slated later in February.

Complementing the new prime, Canon also unveiled the RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM, a zoom that produces both circular and diagonal fisheye effects across its range. The RF 7-14mm adds leadscrew STM focusing and lens controls designed with video in mind, delivering quiet, smooth focus pulls and tactile control for run-and-gun creators and gimbal setups. Like the 14mm, the fisheye is built to L-series standards with weather sealing and rugged construction for field use.

Rounding out the announcements is a limited 30th Anniversary PowerShot G7 X Mark III in graphite finish. The limited edition targets vloggers and compact camera collectors who want a distinctive aesthetic in a proven pocketable imaging platform. Canon indicated that the fisheye zoom and the G7 X limited edition will arrive on separate schedules from the RF 14mm.

For photographers who prioritize low-light performance, the RF 14mm f/1.4L represents a meaningful step: it pairs f/1.4 speed with ultra-wide coverage in an L-series package, useful for Milky Way work, expansive foregrounds, and cinematic wide-angle video. Video shooters benefit from the VCM and STM implementations across the two lenses for quieter, smoother AF. The lack of front filter threads on the 14mm is a practical constraint; plan filter stacks around rear-gel solutions or slot-style holders when you need NDs or grads.

Expect hands-on reviews and sample galleries soon as testers put the new glass through nightscape, astro, and motion workflows. For now, the 14mm f/1.4L gives photographers a new option for “fast glass” at the extreme wide end, while the 7-14mm fisheye and the limited G7 X Mark III expand choices for creators who shoot both stills and video.
