Austria's Top Table Tennis Stars Set for 96th National Championships
Maciej Kolodziejczyk and Nina Skerbinz each claimed their first national singles title at the 96th Austrian Championships in Horn, with 16-year-old Skerbinz edging a seven-game thriller.

The 96th Austrian National Championships arrived in Horn, Lower Austria, with the men's singles title race blown wide open after defending champion Andreas Levenko withdrew before the weekend began. When the paddles were finally put down, two first-time national champions had emerged.
Maciej Kolodziejczyk and Nina Skerbinz claimed the singles titles, both celebrating their first national singles crowns in impressive fashion. Kolodziejczyk had entered as top seed and the main favourite, aiming to convert that billing into a maiden national singles title. He did exactly that.
Kolodziejczyk delivered a controlled performance through the men's draw, defeating Liu Zhenlong in the final 4-2. On his way to the title, he dominated Simon Pfeffer in the semifinals, while Zhenlong advanced after a dramatic seven-game win over Alexander Chen. For anyone who watched Kolodziejczyk in the Bundesliga this season, the clinical semifinal display was no surprise. He had been a three-time Austrian champion previously, twice in mixed doubles and once in doubles, but a senior singles crown was the missing piece.
The women's competition produced the weekend's most remarkable story. Sixteen-year-old Skerbinz produced one of the standout performances of the championships, defeating Karoline Mischek in a thrilling seven-game final 4-3, having come through a confident semifinal win over Nicole Galitschitsch. Mischek had reached the final after edging past Elina Fuchs in another tight encounter. A teenager winning a national senior singles title in seven games, against one of the country's most experienced players, is the kind of result that shifts conversations about Austria's future in the sport.

The doubles events added further drama. Mischek and Galitschitsch secured the women's doubles title, while Julian Rzihauschek and Alexander Chen triumphed in men's doubles after a close five-game final. The women's doubles runners-up were Julia Dür and Mariia Lytvyn, the young talent who had been among the names to watch heading into the weekend.
The Austrian National Championships date back to 1923, and the all-time records in singles remain with Werner Schlager on the men's side with 12 titles, and Liu Jia with 15 on the women's side. Kolodziejczyk and Skerbinz are a long way from those tallies, but first titles have a habit of breeding more.
