Plymouth School District Offers Hands-On Sourdough Class for Beginner Bakers
Plymouth's "Sourdough Bread & Discard Recipes" class covers starter creation, proofing, shaping, and scoring in one session while tackling the discard problem beginners dread.

Plymouth School District's Community Education & Recreation program added a hands-on sourdough course to its spring 2026 catalog, targeting beginners who want to move past kitchen hesitation and into a working starter. The class, titled "Sourdough Bread & Discard Recipes," was announced April 6 and covers the full technical sequence in a single session: building a starter from scratch, then progressing through mixing, proofing, shaping, and scoring.
That's substantial ground to cover in one sitting, and the curriculum structure suggests it was built with real beginners in mind. The course addresses two sticking points that derail most new sourdough bakers before they ever pull a loaf: not knowing how to manage a live culture through regular feedings, and not knowing what to do with the discard that accumulates along the way. By bundling core loaf technique with discard recipes, Plymouth's program gives participants a practical answer to both problems before they leave the room.
The announcement arrived just five days after National Sourdough Day on April 1, fitting a pattern in municipal education programming where fermentation-focused courses cluster around food holidays and the early spring season, when interest in home baking tends to spike.
Community education classes in this format differ from online tutorials in one critical way: a live instructor and a working starter put participants in direct contact with the sensory cues no video can fully convey, how properly developed dough holds tension during shaping, how a scored loaf opens along the ear. Learning to read those signals in real time, with guidance, compresses what might otherwise be weeks of solo trial-and-error into a single afternoon.
Registration for the spring 2026 catalog is handled through Plymouth School District's community education portal in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
