Avoid Save and Exit, Use Save As: Sims 4 Photo Bug Workaround
Community poster Elfinemly shared tested steps that reduce the risk of the recurring Sims 4 "black/blank photos" bug; follow Save As and specific exit habits to protect your saves.

Community tester Elfinemly has laid out a practical workaround that appears to reduce the chance of the persistent black or blank photo bug in Sims 4 saves. The issue corrupts placed photos in households and builds, turning cherished snapshots into dark or empty frames, and the workaround gives players concrete steps to protect heavily invested saves until an official patch arrives.
The key behavior to avoid is the in-game single-button Save & Exit. Players report that using Save & Exit can trigger photo corruption. Instead, save normally with the standard save command, then exit the game without pressing the Save & Exit button. Similarly, do not rely on the in-game main menu to switch between saves. Exiting to the main menu and loading a different save session has been reported to cause photos to go dark when you return. Close and restart the game if you need to change saves to reduce that risk.
Routine Save As backups are central to the recommended defense. Periodically use Save As to create distinct save versions; these backup saves have a better chance of retaining intact photos if one copy becomes corrupted. For players who curate galleries or run legacy households, frequent Save As snapshots preserve progress and give you roll-back options without losing photo content.
Elfinemly also suggests a proactive content-recovery method: as you take pictures, place them in a dedicated room and upload that room to your Library or Gallery. Uploading a room that contains your photos means you can re-import the room if placed images go dark in your live save. Treat the dedicated room as a photo archive or in-game "darkroom" - it is a practical way to retain visual assets even if placed objects on a lot are affected.
EA/Maxis has identified a fix and is planning a patch in early February, so this workaround is intended as temporary protection for players with long-running saves and complex builds. Implementing these behaviors now will reduce the likelihood of losing image assets and give you breathing room until the official update arrives.
What this means for you: start using Save As regularly, avoid the Save & Exit button, quit to desktop and restart to change saves, and upload a photo room to the Library or Gallery. These steps are low-effort and high-value for anyone who collects in-game photos or maintains legacy households, and they offer a straightforward way to keep your sims' memories from going dark while a permanent fix is finalized.
