Human Remains Found on Oroville Property Lead to Murder Charge Against Joseph Taylor
A citizen's call about human remains on Ricky Road in Oroville led to a murder charge against Joseph Taylor, 52, who was already jailed on an unrelated felony warrant.

A citizen's phone call to the Butte County Sheriff's Office on March 21 set off a chain of events that ended with a 52-year-old Oroville man booked on murder, his victim still unidentified and awaiting DNA analysis.
The call came in Saturday, with a resident reporting human remains at a property on Ricky Road in Oroville. Deputies responded and confirmed the discovery. Detectives then obtained a search warrant for two parcels on Ricky Road, recovering the human remains along with additional evidence related to the investigation.
What followed, according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, was an extensive investigation that led detectives to Joseph Taylor, 52, of Oroville, as the person believed responsible for the killing. Taylor didn't need to be tracked down: he was already sitting in the Butte County Jail on an unrelated felony arrest warrant when detectives built their case against him. At the conclusion of the investigation, he was formally booked on one count of murder.
The victim's identity remains unknown. The Butte County Sheriff's Office confirmed that identification is pending DNA analysis, with no name, age, or other identifying information yet released.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Butte County Sheriff's Office detectives directly at (530) 538-7671.
The detail that Taylor was already in custody on a separate felony warrant at the time of the murder booking raises questions this case has not yet answered publicly: what that original warrant alleged, when he came into custody, and whether his prior detention played any role in the timeline of the Ricky Road investigation. Those answers, along with the victim's identity, will likely define how this case develops.
