Teen Escapes Gunpoint Kidnapping in Hamtramck, Suspect Charged with Assault
A 16-year-old bus stop wait in Hamtramck turned into a gunpoint kidnapping, then a 30-minute rescue when she signaled a Sunoco clerk for help.

A 16-year-old waiting for the school bus in Hamtramck was forced into a van at gunpoint and rescued about 30 minutes later after she managed to alert a Sunoco cashier. Prosecutors say 48-year-old Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields, of Hamtramck, now faces first-degree criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, felonious assault, multiple felony-firearm counts, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The abduction unfolded just after 7 a.m. near Edwin Street and Pulaski, in the area of Brombach, as the girl waited for the bus for Frontier International Academy. Police said a man approached her, put something against her back, and pushed her into the vehicle. She called 911 within minutes, and Hamtramck officers began searching while students from the school helped narrow the trail by tracking her cell signal through apps and passing along tips.
That search led officers to a Sunoco station about two and a half miles away. Investigators said Fields ordered the teen to buy cigarettes, giving her the opening she needed to signal a cashier that she was in danger. The clerk immediately helped her, Fields fled, and officers arrived soon after, found the van, recovered a handgun, and arrested him. Police said the girl was found safe and was later reunited with family.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced the charges on Thursday, April 16, 2026. Fields entered a not-guilty plea at arraignment and was remanded without bond. His next court date was set for April 30, 2026, at 9 a.m. via Zoom. Multiple outlets reported that he is being charged as a third-time habitual offender.
Frontier International Academy said the kidnapping did not happen on school grounds, but the case still hit the heart of Hamtramck’s morning routine: a bus stop, a sidewalk, and a child who should have been headed to class. Hamtramck Police Chief Hussein Farhat said officers recovered a weapon, and city leaders, including Mayor Adam Alharbi and Hamtramck Public Schools Board of Education president Abdulmalik Algahaim, praised the students and police who helped bring the girl home. In a case like this, the detail that lingers is how fast the rescue came together, and how close it came to ending differently.
