Ball x Pit is about to get the kind of free update that can change how runs play out from the first bounce. The Shadow Update lands April 27 and brings two new characters, new balls, new passives, and another building, with developer Kenny Sun teasing evolutions that can freeze time or warp it entirely. For a game built on weird, escalating synergies, that is not just extra content. It is the sort of patch that can redraw the strongest builds, the safest routes, and the most chaotic late-game setups in one shot.

The two new characters give the update an immediate strategic edge. The Tunneller fires shots that wrap around the screen and return from the opposite side, which should create new angles for crowd control and boss pressure in runs where positioning matters. The Tiptoer takes the opposite approach, trading lower health and damage for the ability to stay hidden from enemies at close range, a high-risk setup that could reward sharper route planning and cleaner target selection. Together, they look built to push players away from familiar patterns and into risk-reward choices that fit Ball x Pit’s run-based loop.

The ball count is also climbing fast. The Shadow Update will add 11 new balls, though some are still being held back, and that secrecy matters in a game where every new interaction can snowball into an overpowered chain. Add in the new building and the new passives, and the patch looks less like a cosmetic drop and more like a systems expansion aimed at replayability. The promise of time-bending evolutions makes that even bigger, because anything that alters tempo in a brick-breaking survival roguelite can reshape how players survive the mid-game and cash out in the endgame.

That scale fits Devolver Digital’s broader 2026 plan for Ball x Pit, which has already passed 1 million players. The publisher said three free updates were coming this year, with the Regal Update in January, the Shadow Update in April, and the Naturalist Update in July. Regal arrived January 23 and added The Falconer, The Carouser, eight new balls, and Endless Mode, giving players a clear preview of how substantial these post-launch drops can be. Ball x Pit launched on October 15, 2025 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and the Shadow Update looks ready to be the next major reason to jump back into Ballbylon.
