The Gay Games has spent 44 years building one of the world's largest LGBTQ sports gatherings, and until now, a controller has never been part of the equipment list. That changes on July 3, 2026, when València hosts the first esports competitions in Gay Games history, featuring Overwatch 2 and EA FC26 as part of the 12th Gay Games running June 27 through July 4.

The Federation of Gay Games confirmed the esports addition and was explicit about the format: this is a "strictly amateur only event." The organization framed it directly as a community play initiative. "This is a space for community gamers and hobbyists to compete on a world stage without the pressure of professional play," the FGG said in a statement. That framing matters in a gaming landscape where the line between amateur and semi-professional has blurred considerably, particularly in titles like Overwatch 2 where ranked ladder play can quietly professionalize a player's skill set.

The two-game slate covers distinct corners of the competitive gaming world. Overwatch 2 brings team-based shooter coordination to the field, while EA FC26, the formerly FIFA-branded soccer simulation, rounds out the inaugural card. Registration is open for both, and the structure accommodates solo players who want in without a pre-built squad: individual entrants for Overwatch 2 will be placed onto teams before competition begins. Those wanting to show up with their full roster can register as a pre-formed team. EA FC26 registration is individual only.

Esports registration fees sit at $75 for the Elite tier and $20 for Amateur, putting them toward the lower end of the Gay Games fee schedule, which ranges from $20 for the Amateur esports bracket up to $330 for sailing. Anyone who registers to compete in esports gets full access to the event's broader cultural and competitive programming.

Queer visibility in competitive gaming has grown unevenly across titles and genres. Fighting games have historically carried the highest LGBTQ profile in esports, but competitive shooters and MOBAs have developed their own established queer communities. An international amateur competition under the Gay Games umbrella gives those communities a formal competitive stage that has not previously existed within LGBTQ sports infrastructure.

The esports debut lands inside a larger event that València is treating as a full cultural showcase. Programming around the Games includes LGBTQ+ literary meetings, a culinary festival, art exhibitions, a photographic marathon, short films, theatrical performances, fashion, music, video mapping, and workshops. The city is also planning a pyrotechnic display, something the official Gay Games materials describe as a València signature known across Spain.

Registration for Gay Games XII is currently open at the official site. The esports slate on July 3 is the first, but given the FGG's explicit framing around community access and amateur participation, it is unlikely to be the last.
