Windrose Sells 500,000 Copies in 48 Hours on Steam Early Access
Windrose sold 500,000 copies in 48 hours, turning a pirate survival pitch into one of Steam Early Access’s biggest breakout launches of 2026.

Windrose crossed 500,000 copies in just 48 hours, a launch pace most indie survival games never come close to matching. For a pirate-themed Early Access release with no blockbuster marketing machine behind it, the number instantly puts Windrose in rare company and shows how fast a sharp genre hook can catch fire on Steam.
The game went into Early Access on April 14, 2026, and launched across Steam, Epic Games Store, and STOVE under Pocketpair Publishing. Kraken Express, the studio behind it, had previously operated as Windrose Crew and originally Crosswind Crew. Pocketpair’s framing of the game as a revenge story against Blackbeard gives the pitch a clear center of gravity, and that premise appears to have landed with players looking for a survival craft game that offers more than just another island grind.

Steam’s response has been strong enough to suggest the momentum is sticking. Windrose is sitting at Very Positive with 4,301 user reviews and an 89 percent approval rate, a sign that the early surge is being backed by real goodwill rather than launch-week noise. That matters in a crowded survival market, where a big opening can fade quickly if the core loop does not hold up.
The Early Access build already arrives with a substantial amount of content. Steam says the main story takes about 50 to 70 hours to complete, while STOVE lists 3 biomes, around 30 procedurally generated islands, and more than 90 handcrafted points of interest. The official site says the game supports up to 8 players in co-op on Steam, though it recommends parties of up to 4 for the best performance. Between naval combat, boarding actions, building, factions, reputation systems, and NPC workers, Windrose is launching as a full-feeling survival package rather than a thin preview.
The demand was building before release. The game was revealed in a trailer at The Triple-i Initiative on April 9, 2026, and multiple outlets reported roughly 1.5 million Steam wishlists before launch. Pocketpair and the developers have said Early Access should last 1.5 to 2.5 years, with the full version planned to add around 50 percent more content. They also expect the price to rise after full release, which makes the current window especially important for anyone who wants in early on what is shaping up to be a major word-of-mouth Steam hit.
