GrabTone Plugin Fuses Two Audio Files Into Analog-Flavored Playable Instruments
Kobito's free GrabTone plugin fuses two audio files into a MIDI-playable, analog-flavored synth voice using a sine-bank engine originally built for a vocoder module.

Kobito released GrabTone on March 9, a free experimental synthesizer plugin that takes two ordinary audio files and reshapes them into a new, MIDI-playable instrument voice with an analog character. The plugin is available for Windows and macOS in VST3 and AU formats and is currently free with promo code GRABTONEPROMO100 via Kobito's Gumroad store at kobito.gumroad.com, with a reported regular price of $19 USD.
The two-file workflow is the heart of the concept. File A, called Shape, provides movement, articulation, and rhythm. File B, called Tone, delivers the harmonic and timbral information. The plugin then fuses them into something entirely new. "GrabTone doesn't try to perfectly reproduce the source sounds. Instead, it transforms them into something new — an expressive, analog-flavored synthesizer tone that can easily be played as a MIDI instrument."
The origin of that synthesis engine is rooted in Kobito's earlier work. "The idea for GrabTone actually came from the sine-bank engine I built for the VocoderMorph module in GrabTracks," the developer explained. "I originally developed it following my own taste, wanting to layer an analog-style synth character into vocoder sounds. Once that was working well, I started wondering: Why not build a synthesizer around this idea? That's how GrabTone was born."
Kobito intentionally kept the interface minimal. Beyond the drag-and-drop file selection, a row of knobs covers saturation, filter cutoff, resonance, spread, detune, noise, and separate intensity controls for the Shape and Tone sections. Visual feedback panels for each section give a basic read of what the engine is doing. As Bedroom Producers Blog put it: "Most of the magic happens as soon as you've selected two files. Play your keyboard and listen to your sonic Frankenstein monster."
A version 1.0.0.2 update has also shipped, addressing thread-safety issues that caused instability in certain DAWs, FL Studio among them, and improving synchronization for file and state handling as well as preview playback.
To claim the free download, enter zero in the pay-what-you-want field at Kobito's Gumroad checkout. The promo code GRABTONEPROMO100 is reported to apply automatically, though Audiopluginguy notes it can be entered manually if needed. A license key is delivered after providing an email address. No expiry date has been announced for the promotion; neither Bedroom Producers Blog nor Audiopluginguy could identify a deadline, and BPB recommended downloading immediately.
