Omaha Man Proposes Outside Kauffman Stadium on Royals Opening Day
Steven Mitchell drove nearly 190 miles from Omaha and dropped to one knee outside Kauffman Stadium 30 minutes before first pitch, turning a family tradition into an engagement.

A Kansas City Royals fan from Omaha made the local news cycle on March 30 by faking a routine photo outside Kauffman Stadium and dropping to one knee, roughly 30 minutes before first pitch against the Minnesota Twins. What the video of Steven Mitchell's proposal to Amy Hasenjager also captures, in vivid handheld detail, is everything an engagement ring needs to be built for: afternoon sunlight, tens of thousands of fans, bystanders with cameras, and a woman who had absolutely no idea.
Mitchell had driven nearly 190 miles from Omaha with Hasenjager and her parents, who keep a near-annual pilgrimage to The K's home opener. "We were just here for Opening Day with my parents, and we come almost every year," Hasenjager said. Mitchell used the family tradition as cover. "It's been a long, nervous day," he admitted afterward. The moment unfolded during what Hasenjager described as an unremarkable group photo: "We were taking a regular photo and then he turned and he was like, 'Just wait a second.'"
That kind of proposal, executed outdoors in front of a crowd with cameras already rolling, is a durability test for a ring as much as a romantic one. Bezel settings, which encase the stone in a continuous metal collar rather than lifted prongs, eliminate the risk of a prong catching fabric or bending in the commotion of a crowd. Platinum outperforms 14-karat white gold in exactly this scenario: its density holds a polish without replating and resists the scratches that come with a stadium full of jostling strangers. A comfort-fit band, rounded along the inner bore, slides cleanly onto a hand that has been cold and nervous since the parking lot. For the inevitable video, a round brilliant cut returns light from every angle, making it the most readable shape in handheld footage shot against open sky; a cushion cut offers similar versatility with slightly softer edges.
"Well, he popped the question about a half hour ago, right before we were going to walk into the K," Hasenjager told reporters after saying yes. The Royals went on to host Minnesota in the 2026 home opener that afternoon, the first time the game had been broadcast free over-the-air in Kansas City since 2007. Mitchell's pre-game ring had a harder act to follow than anything on the field.
