Sam Darnold Marries Katie Hoofnagle, Radiant-Cut Ring Stole the Show

The radiant cut earns its name honestly. With approximately 70 facets arranged to scatter light across a rectangular silhouette, it generates fire comparable to a round brilliant while offering the elongated geometry of an emerald cut. It is a persuasive stone shape for someone meant to be noticed on a sideline, and when Sam Darnold dropped to one knee on a Dana Point, California beach in July 2025, the ring he produced made exactly that case.

"YES!!!!!" wrote Katie Hoofnagle in the caption of her engagement announcement, the exclamation points doing the work that words could not. The photos, geotagged from Dana Point, where Darnold grew up, showed the couple kissing, dancing, and captured in the proposal itself, Darnold on one knee surrounded by white flowers and candles at the shoreline. The ring: a radiant-cut diamond set on a pavé band, its center stone flanked by a continuous shimmer of round brilliants pressed flush into the metal.

The choice of a pavé setting beneath a radiant center is not accidental. Where a plain solitaire shank offers stark contrast, a pavé band dissolves the boundary between stone and finger, extending brilliance all the way down. The effect on a radiant-cut center is particularly considered: both elements share the same visual language of scattered, overlapping light. It reads as one unified cascade rather than a stone sitting atop a ring. Hoofnagle wore it sideline throughout the Seahawks' 2025 regular season, one of the more closely watched engagement rings in the NFL.

The couple married in early April in an intimate ceremony attended by some of the league's most recognizable figures, among them Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and actress Hailee Steinfeld. Hoofnagle announced the news on Instagram Story with characteristic economy: "I have a husband now, btw." She displayed her wedding ring in the same post. No further elaboration was offered or needed.

The timing carried its own shape. Darnold, 28, had led Seattle to a Super Bowl LX title just eight weeks earlier, a 29-13 win over the New England Patriots at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. He was overheard discussing the upcoming wedding on the field that night before the confetti had settled. Two months later, the quarterback who rebuilt his career entirely in Seattle closed out the offseason with the other ring he had been working toward. Hoofnagle, a marketing specialist and Bay Area native, had been beside him for most of that climb. The radiant cut, it turns out, had been making its case since July.
